Well, I assume thaat file is still corrupted since i haven't replaced it, but i will leave things alone till 10.2 comes out. I assume Apple will let us buy the CD for $20, at least they had better!
I don't mind staying in OS9 at all, in fact I love it on this G4. AOL is surprisingly fast for me using its own browser so I don't really need to use IE.
I will buy 128 Mb more RAM from PNY soon-they actually have the best price I've seen and i can get it where i work.
I will occasionaley switch back to OSX just to play around and burn CDs. I have the dock shrunk to a very small size(its kinda cute). Hiding it didn't work because its difficult to put items in the trash when its hidden.
I happen to dig OS9, but OSX is nice to look at. i can live with it for everyday tasks speedwise, but the internet speed is unacceptable. I believe Apple is well aware of the problem and I'm hopeful that 10.2 will fix many problems. Till then, its OS 9.2 for me!...........................................
For me, speed sometimes is not an issue for Mac OS X. Just the brilliant design and user interface is all a computer user needs. Deep down Mac OS X is faster than any OS Apple's ever come up with. Just wait and see. I'll prove all you right.

try getting that file fixed nevertheless. call up apple support maybe (hahaha!)? after they make you zap the pram 100 times, you might actually get someone who knows something.
i have to agree that os x is not just about speed. its such a beautiful os! i feel weird going back to 9. as for aol's browser, it is the worst thing i've ever used!! dont judge your computer by it. whatever it is, it's always aol's fault. (btw, i pay for aol too, but only for the mail, which i could save $15 and do without.) actually, if you want to compare, aol crashed all the time on os 9 or below, and i had problems opening web pages at least 80% of the time. i used to send hate mail to aol on a weekly basis. but aol is much better on my new imac running os x! but then again, my imac has 768mb of ram. see if you can get at least 512mb. i understand thats the minimum you should have for running os x anyway.
I just added another 128 so now i have 512. i can't imagine i would need more than that but i could always return the 128 and buy 256. Is that necessary or should 512 be enough?......................
I may be wrong, but one way you can check is by running "top" and checking the statistics; if you're not getting many page-ins or -outs, then you've got enough RAM onboard for whatever you use your mac for.
well, the extra memory didn't help at all, so i will wait till 10.2 comes out and use OS9 for sure till then. I love this G4 when I'm using 9.2 Its a fast machine with it. ...................................
<strong> Well, last time I crashed in Os9 was some 2 or 3 days ago and that sucs big time, sure. But to me it's nothing compared to all the frustration with OsX's permissions, lack of drivers, font table confusion (for us speaking languages not yet supported by OsX) etc. etc. etc. not to mention it's slugginess. I'm sure it will mature and become great one day but at present time Os9 IMHO is far superior in every area but stability.

What is so difficult about dealing with permissions? The only time I've ever had to work with file permissions is when some lousy installer put a folder on my system that I didn't want, and I couldn't delete it. All I had to do was open the terminal, sudo to root and rm -r that little bastard.
Font tables? That's your problem if you don't speak a supported language, Apple cannot be expected to support every language on the face of the Earth, however they DO support an incredible number of languages with OS X.
OS X is "sluggy"? Odd, it's never slugged me once, in fact no computer has ever hit me. IF you mean "sluggish", then yeah, if you've got an older system it's not so fast. However OS X is plenty fast enough on my Powermac G4 400 MHz, w/ 576 MB RAM and Radeon. I've noticed that most people who whine about OS X's lack of speed are either on G3 systems or G4 systems without enough RAM.
10.2 is going end the discussion of performance once and for all...it's going to be a speed demon, the cat's meow, the piggy's tit, the doberman's dong.
Until then, have fun crashing in OS 9, managing those extension sets, and allocating memory to each application individually. Damn I miss all that system tweaking I got to do with OS 9! OS X doesn't let me create extension sets to play with, wha wha whaaa!1
I`m with JYD on this one OS X is great for me and RAM does make a large diffrence. On a dual 533 mulitasking and pretty much everything I do exept resize windows is much faster in X then 9. When I am actually working I never resize windows anyways. I have never had file permission problems although I do run in root. Back to the ram issue when listening to itunes and surfing the web I use around 400 meg of RAM. when doing work I find my self using all but 20meg of my 1.2 gig of RAM...
