a Sony-Ericsson cellphone, a Palm TX and a 4GB USB thumb drive.
Does iPhone offer a drive mode? I know it didn't at first, I don't remember if they added that feature later or not.

I WANT a separate iPod for music. I bought an iPod originally to clear 20 or 30GB of hard drive space on my PowerBook. The 16GB of the iPhone just isn't enough storage for music.
Do you keep backups of that music? If the iPod dies, would you lose all your music?

Wasting precious battery life using an iPhone to listen to music seems a waste. A dedicated player with a dead battery isn't as tragic as a dead phone battery.
It's pretty efficient with respect to audio playback.
Sorry but the iPod Touch or general iPod will be here for quite some time. Most folks aren't interested in AT&T and are interested in their Audio/Video on-the-go whether it's attaching to an interface atop your Boat cruisin' the lake of your choice or river, or ocean, to your car audio to exercise [not just for the gym, but I see almost everyone who owns a damn dog walks their dogs with their iPods on--too bad for the dog who no longer is the purpose of the walk, but nonetheless they are used even to take Rover outdoors], to Camping to all sorts of one's on-the-go audio/video distracting needs.

There are several 3rd-party options that don't require command line hacking, but they will probably have to be retooled for v2.0 as I think they all require a jailbroken device to work.
It would be nice if Apple allowed you to dynamically partition the drive for FAT32 (or HFS+) for use a Flash drive. They already offer this functionality in Disk Utility, but the iPhone doesn't show up there. A simple option in iTunes with a slider to create disk mode on the fly is a feature that I think should be added.

I agree. I think the iPod line using OS X is just getting started.
Its hilarious to see people sing the doom of iPhone because it doesn't fulfill the wishes of every last developer.
You totally missed the point - I was commenting from the standpoint of a user.

For the ones who count (the actual purchasers) there will be more great applications coming at them than they know what to do with. And finding/installing them will be easier than any other platform (and I'll wager that includes Android-based apps.)
That will likely be true of Android also. The point is the consumer will likely have several Android platforms to choose from along with manufactures. Choice is a powerful motivating factor with respect to consumer hardware, with Apple you currently get one phone and one tablet to choose from. That is a problem and is one of the reasons I was disappointed with the WWDC debut of the new phones.

You are assuming everybody here is a developer, likely a big mistake. Further even a developer needs to understand the dynamics of the market place.

BTW, how is that Apple has to 'catch up' with something that doesn't even exist in the wild yet?
Read for content please. The catching up comes when the market if flooded with Android hardware.
analysts always prove that it is more important to listen to your instincts than to the "talking heads". His logic completely neglects people like me who want the iphone for business capacity, have a Nano for the gym, but also own the 160GB for a large music collection that I like to carry with me on business Trips.
Ipods will continue to progress towards delivering music and video and iPhones will chase our multiple mobile cellular needs. If Apple listens to customer needs, it will have a constant market. If they because a version of MicroSoft, they will open doors for competition. Its that simple...
Well, the problem is now that the iPhone is too cheap, it's definitely gonna cannibalize some iPod sales. Apple seriously needs to bring down the iPod Touch price. No wonder they're giving them away in the back-to-school promo, they need to generate interest in them now that they're basically a stripped down and more expensive iPhone (except for the 32GB model of course, which offers the extra storage the 16GB iPhone doesn't).
Sorry, but no. The summer give-away been done for at least the three years (including this year) as an incentive for students to buy mac laptops, not because the iphone is cheaper. Also, I know I am not the only person who feels this way, but I don't WANT an iPhone. I do like the iPod and will continue to use one, but I have no intention of paying a monthly a monthly ontract to use an iPhone...especially after looking at the wide variety of phones in Japan.
can the iphone3g continue growing with ONE model, looking at the ipod history, it started to really grow with different models and form factors...i say there will be another or more new form factors before 6/09......but what and when.....? anybody think a new form factor will be here for Christmas or Jan??

I'm getting an iPhone 2 to merge 3 devices:
a Sony-Ericsson cellphone, a Palm TX and a 4GB USB thumb drive.

i think once the gsm is completely penetrated it will turn to other "markets" e.g. cdma but with probable mulityear contracts it will be years
what are the present cdma subscribers and which countries use it??
