Could I use AOL IM to perform text messaging instead of AT&T SMS messaging service?

It should, but alas, I don't have an iPhone 3G so...

A work around for that would be to subscribe to the smallest SMS package then when someone texts you, you respond using the AIM client. After you respond to them they simply need to respond to your IM. This way you only use 1 SMS text. You could also tell any friends that you often text with that happens to have an AIM client on their phone to use IMs instead SMS.
