All I would like to add is that Apple, had pre-launch orders, and those order numbers are known. So Apple ran out of iPhones on the first launch weekend and they clearly did not want to repeat that. So add it up, the market apple is selling into is much larger than the first time. They did not want to run out of phones like they did the first time. The pre-launch inventory numbers can be found or estimated. Inventories are running out of the iPhone 3G. Didn't Apple order something like 1.5 million iPhone 3Gs then later add another 500,000 or more to the order. Those numbers can be found. And the inventory is running out everywhere. I am not saying that Apple had the entire pre-launch inventory out on shelves, but I would assume it is close. I could see Apple wanting 1 million on shelf and 1 million in reserve, so they would have a quick restock Monday morning. Thoughts?
so what were the iphone preorder #'s, rumors yes but actual, i haven't seen any. wasn't there a rumor of 25 million ordered or maybe that was planned production

That sounds like a big production number like for the rest of the year and maybe part of next year as well. It is not a pre-launch number. Again those pre-launch inventories were reported here I think so maybe not actual but close enough. I believe that the estimates came from China. And if I remember correctly that number was 1.5 million then later added to by 500,000 but I would think that only half of that would be on shelf and the rest in warehouses close to major sales areas.
I knew I had read the amount of inventory Apple planned on having on hand somewhere and a litle searching yielded this. While maybe not totally accurate the numbers suggest that Apple was well prepared to not run out of stock, here or internationally.

A 1 million weekend may not be so far fetched.

maybe 3 million, and more shipping by "air", att is taking "orders" that's how i "ordered" my 8 and 16 white they say 5-7 days. maybe this week. apple must have a ramp up schedule and ways to adjust shipments especially since so many countries came on line.
i don't read in the press about how apple is not going to sell that 10 million, now we need to talk about 20 million by years end. i wonder if they will upgrade the memory for Christmas, or just try to fill the massive orders.

1 million it was! Apple officially said they sold 1 million iPhones during the first weekend.
and I find it weird that some reactions here are so condescending towards the european comments on this board, and the world market in general. (especially csimmons' remark of: "I'm sorry, but WHO ARE YOU and WHY SHOULD WE CARE?")
get your head out of your ar*se, america is not the capital of the world, it doesn't even come close.
the only thing it is great in is egos and ignorance.
Not that I have to justify my comments to a total stranger, but...
First off: Although I'm an American, I've lived for the last 20 years in Germany, and have probably seen more of Europe than you have, due to the nature of my job. I consider Europe my home, so you can take your comments and kindly shove them where the sun doesn't shine. Your obviously anti-American sentiment shows through quite clearly.
Secondly, the reason for my comment was to point out that the guy I was replying to was writing as if he was some kind of authority or had some actual facts regarding iPhone demand in his area. Reports are coming in from all over that iPhone demand in Europe is extremely high, AND that most stores were understocked. To imply that iPhone demand isn't high simply does not reflect the reality on the ground. The guy proabably never took into account that the reason there were no lines at the shops in his area (according to his "feedback") was because it makes no sense to stand in line for a product THAT IS ALREADY SOLD OUT. At the telecom shops in my city (Stuttgart, Germany) the lines dissipated very quickly when word got out that all the available stock was already gone, No product, no long lines. Get it?
