Fussy? Perhaps, but I'm a Mac user, what do you expect!

    Firmware update done.

The screen still has a yellow tint to it.

Yep, this is simply stupid. This just proves that whiners will always be whiners...Apple launches the best smartphone of the planet, and pickers still find what to complain about, even when the tint is a feature, not a flaw...

I'm surprised that noone's mentioned yet that this was a problem on the 1st gen iPhone too. There was a sizeable batch of yellow-tinted screens towards the beginning of the production run. I'm surprised they haven't nailed this yet.

I haven't tried the newer 2.0 firmware revision yet - so hopefully that'll make things better. But I definitely prefer the non-yellow version!!

Here is a picture taken of my new iPhone 3G (8GB) and my iPhone 2.5G (8GB). They are at the exact same spot in the film Ratatouille and you can clearly see the 3G is yellow-washed and has much higher contrast. In some scenes this looks better, but the majority it looks worse and dark scenes (like when they are sleeping) are almost unwatchable.

If you're looking at something that is supposed to be white, but now it's yellow, how is that a feature? If I look at a picture of my girl and she looks jaundiced, how is that a feature?

You're not the first to call a flaw a feature. It looks to me that it is clearly a discoloration. It doesn't even look like it's a different color temperature, it just looks wrong. Maybe the temperature was way low, quite out of bounds from what I expect from a new Apple product, which are often set at about 6500K.

Blurring a gray part of the screen on both, the eyedropper took shows the original to be is very slightly blue, 3G is more strongly green.

I like the yellow. I like the gold tint of MacBook pro displays when seen from the side. I like the rich taste of vanilla with the little flecks of bean.

Whiners: just wait for the 3rd party app that resets the calibration to your fluorescent tube addled retinas and you'll be fine.

PS I like the top iPhone image of Ratatouille better too.

According to an engadget article, this was planned. The color profile on the 3G iPhone has been changed (see the update at the bottom):

Updating to the latest version of iPhone 2.0 5A347 will adjust the screen to reduce the "yellow" appearance. Apparently the shipping phones are running 2.0 5A345.
