G4+ by MWTY

Got some information from an apple rep today. He said that the G4+ (7460?) would be out by Macworld Tokyo, maybe sooner, and would be a bit above 1Ghz (but not waaayyy over like some are speculating). He said that there wouldn't be any G5 till next year at the earliest. Also that the new machines would still be quicksilvers and may not have DDR memory (but apple is trying as hard as they can to get DDR in them). He said he's seen the machines and they are fast. Also he mentioned that they might have some dual core feature or hypertreading in that one chip would operate like two. I'm not sure if he's right about that, but it does sound interesting. He's also not sure if there will be dual procs versions of these new machines. But he did say they were fast and that anyone is stupid who would buy a new tower right now when these machines are right around the corner.

The first part of that is certainly believable (not happy, but believable). The part about DDR / multi-core / hyperthreading, however, would require significant changes to the 7450 design to make it work. Not impossible, but I we haven't seen anything about this in the press release Moto put out about the G4 on SOI, did we?

So much for "closing the mhz (Ghz) gap. I fear that Apple (moto) will never ever close or even narrow this gap.

and please spare me the "Mhz doesn't matter" crap. Your right MHz does not matter, but I'll bet my LWA that the 2.2 ghz PIV will soundly outpace a G4 that is " a bit above 1Ghz"

    Just a thought.

P.S. Please spare me the "then just buy a wintel machine" crap too. I love Apple, but doesn't mean I can't bitch!!

So the sentence Also he mentioned that they might have some dual core feature or hypertreading in that one chip would operate like two." where as 2 800mhz would technically be a 1.6ghz doesn't please you either?

Well, if this is the case, then my $3000 sits in my pocket. At this point I refuse to pay for an incremental upgrade, unless I can demonstrate for myself that its worth spending the money.

HOWEVER, I don't believe for one minute that an Apple employee is going to make the statement that anyone who buys a tower now is stupid. That just doesn't do Apple any good.

Well. back to end of 1998 Apple said we wouldn't see G4 until 2000. And we saw it on 99 Seybold.

Usually Apple reps don't know shit about what they are talking about

Slightly higher than 1Ghz G4 with old bus is going to be a tragic

Now, how does this fit with the ee times story that all machines will soon be dual. Could the 7460 actually be a twin core chip? I know that such a beast was always intended for the G4 family, but had thought it had been abandoned. Eventually, no doubt the 7460 will also find its way into the iMac.

    Just a thought.

I'm sorry you don't believe it, but that's what he said. Now like I said about the dual core thingy, I'm not too sure about that being a reality. OTOH, I think if you can get a good deal on an 800MHZ machine that would be pretty good and could hold you off till the G5's arrive sometime next year (or the 2nd Gen of the G5)

sorry but your statement that the G5 won't be out before next year makes the info completely unbelievable IMO.

1.) it will be out before next year

2.) why would an Apple rep no about next year's products?

it sounds so familiar to MWNY 1999. I asked an apple hardware engineer when to expect the G4/sawtooth. Next year. guess what. it came out a month after that.

Some of us know a lot about technology and current Apple products, but none of us know anything about Apple's future plans or directions. My NDA is clean because they have never told me anything.

Accepted Leonis... And absolutely correct. If anyone posts inside information leaked by an Apple Rep you know it is bullshit. Of course even Apple Reps like to speculate... I'm just waiting for J.D. to get me drunk so he can pump me for information..

PLz people don't let wintel machines take over your minds. Apple will surprise us. Wintel's suck, although the AMD's are pretty fast. But plz never buy wintels. Thats speaking nonsense.

Is Wintel good? No, unless the world is flat. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Two 800s is not a 1600. It's two 800s and nothing more. How would 100 16s feel? The same as a 1600? No.

If you put 100*16 thats going to fill the room isn't it and 2*800 you can put in the case. Technicaly it will feel different, but they will be even in cpu time.

    Wow!

Twinturbo has brought the most modest, resonable and most likely rumor to this forum I have ever heard.

I think we will see Apollo and low 1(1.1-1.2) Ghz Macs within the next six months, before MWNY. I think they will represent and incremental improvement in performance not a revolutionary increase.

I think the G5 Mac is an early to mid 2003 reality.

The Bottom line is that top of the line PPC will *never* match a top of the line x86 proc, *never*. The Mhz myth maybe a myth but x86 proc are getting faster, faster the PPC.

All the talk about pipelines and how the P4 has many more than the P3 disguises the fact that the old 500Mhz G4 had 4 stages and the new G4s have 7! The Mhz myth applies to Apple just as well!
