<a href="http://www.thinksecret.com/"; target="_blank">Think Secret</a> has some more screen shots (some of which I haven't seen before) at their website. They can be found under the Jaguar article for July 9th.

Since the 'can copy' cursor is green . . . shouldn't the 'cannot copy' cursor be red?

    Yes, it should.

#2 WHAT KINDA OF FREAKISH FREAK WOULD CHANGE THEIR DESKTOP PICTURE EVERY 5 SECONDS?!?

Ok, ok. That probably won't make it into the final . . . but still. Egad.

First off ... there's no way I could stand my computer saying "hello" to me everytime at startup ... the "bong" is bad enough. Some at Apple should perhaps look for employment at Fisher Price.

I hope with the caution sign, that icons stop have seizures when something is wrong ... that was just plain annoying.

But lots of people do. Have you never seen an AOL commercial? I don't think I've ever seen one that didn't have someone talking about how they just looove to hear "You've got mail!"

A new start-up chime is needed. The current choir of angels must be one of the longest running ones, no?

Maybe when Apple gets around to surround sound in 5.1+ channels it could be surround sound!

The "Hello" idea is good and bodes well for Apple. They are remembering the small things too. I always thought the Welcome to Macintosh message was a bit too strobe-like... This and these other new features will make OS X more fun and easier to use, as well as increasing day-to-day efficiency (for everyone, including grouches. The cool gut, you aren't Vulcan, by any chance, are you? )

I agree, it should be red and aquaish in a similar fasion to the copy icon...consistency damnit.

How can you not like the startup chime?!?!?!

Also, the TS Sherlock screenshots seem to indicate that we can turn off the Metal look. Can anyone with recent Jaguar builds comment on this? I hope so - I hate the metal look!

So, you can only change it if you replace the motherboard or buy a new Mac. You can try the app <a href="http://members.shaw.ca/mactracker/"; target="_blank">Mactracker</a> to hear the various startup chimes for the different Macs. [quote]Originally posted by graphiteman:

    Cool, huh?

Apple definitely needs to dump that nasty "brushed" gradeschool-playground cement.

I wish Apple would just use brushed metal for media players (iTunes, QuickTime, etc) and apps imitating real-world devices (like Calculator). It just doesn't seem to fit on apps like Sherlock and iPhoto where you're trying to do work in them.

I don't have OS X, so I haven't looked into this. Maybe you'll be able to figure it out.

    Do this:

    * Open the ArchiveDocument.nib in the iPhoto package.

    * In the instances list, change to outline view instead of icon view

    * Click the disclosure triagle for CustomViewWindow (iPhoto) and then for NSView (Content View)

    * Select GradientTileView and open the Show Info window

    * In the Attributes section, change it to an NSView

    * Select the CustomViewWindow (iPhoto)

    * In the Info panel, go to the Custom Class section and select NSWindow. It will give a message saying it will break a connection. Click OK.

    * Delete the etchedtext "iPhoto" at the top.

    * Select the contents of the window and move it up. Resize the window accordingly.

    * Save.

    * Relaunch iPhoto now in Aqua mode!

edit: added an important step I had accidentally left out.

Well iPhoto really does emulate a real world object - A Photo Album.

Notice that in the latest Jaguar builds, Sherlock is fully Aquaised!

I was wondering why when I did what you originally said, the only thing that became Aqua was the Title Bar to the window...

I think what the brushed-metal is supposed to indicate is that the app is contained primarily on one window. Unlike, say, AppleWorks, you're not opening lots of document windows in FCP or iMovie or Sherlock, and when you do have multiple windows (e.g. multiple QT movies, or possibly multiple Sherlock searches) there is no use for something like a toolbar or floating pallette that can apply to any of them - each has controls built into the window that act specifically on the associated content.

That was a really concise, articulate description , but I hope it got the idea across.

If that is the case, then Apple UI designers have turned into morons.

iChat is brushed metal. iChat opens one window per chat. iChat opens a separate window for Rendezvous buddies. Amorph, sorry, your theory doesn't really hold up.

Apple does need to codify the use of the brushed metal appearance in their HI guidelines. I think that they're supposed to be the basic media apps. I suppose you could ask why the address book will be brushed metal and why Mail isn't but iChat is. Answer is: I don't know.

I guess that makes Apple's UI designers as moronic as their Windows peers.

What, you mean Apple engineers aren't hanging on my every word?

Damn. I'm going to have to fly out there and twist a few arms.
