Are you SERIOUS? You do know that since it's inception, the MacOS ROM boot sound HAS indeed changed DRAMATICALLY from model to model RIGHT? C'MON! I doubt SERIOUSLY that a totally new sound that one hears once in a blue moon would make people not recognize thier mac.

    "Classic" form factor: electronic pulse

    Quadra: guitar chord

    Original Power Macs: *bong!*

People with a longer memory than the LC can comment with more clarity.

Download Mactracker - it has all the startup sounds.

A new startup sound on the next Power Mac would be nice. Not just the chord in a different key, which Apple has been doing recently. but something new....

    Let's see.

No farting, as supposed earlier in this thread.

Maybe a "Welcome to Power Mac G5"

then a different "welcome to.." for each Mac.

Or maybe just a plain old "welcome to Macintosh." I miss that plinetxt message.

I second choosable start up sounds and striped apples!

Ever notice that striped Apples look a lot like the gay flag... maybe thats why they got rid of them.

Wow. Chuck Yeager may have broken the sound barrier, but I think you just broke the idiot barrier with that remark...

    Anyway, getting back on topic...

I wish there was simply an option to turn the startup chime OFF. Back in college, a friend of mine started up his PowerBook during class. The teacher was lecturing at the time and was none to pleased to be interrupted by a power chord. Needless to say, my friend was on the teacher's sh*tlist from that day on. And it's all APPLE's fault!

I remember being shown on certain beige Macs (it wouldn't work on my IIci) that you could push the reset and programmer's button simultaneously on start-up (I think) and have it sound like a car unable to turn over--once you let go, the Mac would continue to boot.

    'Twas a goofy Easter egg.

The startup chime has evolved as the capability of the Mac has improved. what we should have now (instead of the current sound which arrived with the PPC Chip) is something 'big' (not long), possibly like the 'Digital Audio?' sound you get at the Cinema, with a some sort of fancy 3D audio FX.

I'd like to see a user-customizable startup sound too.. sounds fun. But please, no queer rainbows on the Apple logo.

A few years ago the was a rumors that Apple was indeed changing the start-up chime to the the sound of a big orchestra tuning its instruments.

While doing that they also should make it optional. I hate it when it comes on in a silent library or such... <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

For those who complain of sound when you want it to be quiet, just turn the sound off before you turn it off each time. You can make a very simple AppleScript that automatically turns the sound off and put it in your Shutdown items folder to do just that. And maybe put a sound volume up script in the startup folder, as if there was never any startup chime.

If Apple made it customizable, they could just make it pretty hard for an average user (instead of being accessed through system preferences or something like that, put a BIOS file that can be resedited or something in the system files or a command that needs to be accessed through the terminal). Only the guys that really know what they're doing will bother...most normal people will say "you have to do all that! what a waste of time."

On the subject of computers that sound like airplanes, my friend built a PC that has what I believe is a 7000RPM Delta Fan, plus a few CD drives and a CPU fan. When it starts up it sounds like it might take off!

Just mute the sound before power-down. There won't be any chime on startup.

I used to do that, but then I discovered the wonders of sleeping the computer.

You think *that's* funny... I know the last person left who is still using Microsoft Bob!

He thinks it's great and was annoyed that Windows 98 wasn't Bob-compatible!

FYI my comment was supposed to be a joke, I was mocking the people talking about start up sounds.
