Like I said, you and Mr. H appeared to be talking pass each other and were missing what the other was saying. (I blame the "two people separated by a common language" affect.) Mr. H was asking about third party repair insurance (like Allstate offering repair warranties for Apple products) while you went on about in-store warranties. I have never hear of any warranties being offered by anyone without a stake in the original purchase (manufacture, seller or credit card company), have you?
OK, I see what you are saying, and no, I've never seen, or heard of, any insurance companies, in this country, offering service policies for Macs. However, such insurance companies exist for the purpose of warranting other products. In any case that I've ever heard of, with respect to the other products, the manufacturers warranties are always the better choice, if one wants an extended warranty.
The US and Britain have entirely different laws governing the warranting of products to start with, so, the best advice concerning that here, would come from this side of the pond.
Woah... can't believe I missed this one. I worked part-time for Geek Squad for about three years, and I've seen first hand the benefits and consequences of purchasing from Best Buy. It is really a simple matter -- there are only two cases in which you should buy an Apple from Best Buy:
1) You actually want an accidental damage protection plan (a good idea when you'll be using your laptop under circumstances which have a very high chance of causing physical abuse-type damage, or if kids will be swarming about it).
2) There is no Apple Store and, for some reason, you can't buy it online. Or if the price at Best Buy is just that good (e.g. a clearance). And if you buy in this case, do not get your warranty from Best Buy (unless you are getting the accidental damage plan).
Best Buy Repair Service
You really do not want to send a Mac out through Best Buy for warranty service if you can help it. Ever. More than half of the laptops they sent out while I was fixing computers in the department came back horribly scratched or otherwise poorly maintained, while many of the repairs did not fully resolve the issue at hand. I would say a good fourth of the repairs made resulted in entirely new issues being introduced to the laptop. Best Buy's repair facility does a terrible job when it comes to fixing computers, and an especially terrible job when it comes to fixing Apple laptops. I wouldn't even want to depend on them to repair my PC laptop.
Service at the store is directly relative to the competency of their staff. Most Best Buy stores do not have an experienced Apple technician on staff. Many employees will be quick to send your computer to service for something which should be done locally.
Buy from Best Buy only if you don't have a choice...
If you need warranty, and don't care about accidental damage coverage, buy Apple Care. If you cannot find Apple Care, buy it over the Apple Store or on eBay.
