rok> iM with you on the quark issue... whats worse is I am forced to use Xpress-passport, which uses a dongle(hardware-key). I used griffin's iMate USB-adapter thingie, and between the instability of quark in X, and the on-and-off dependability of the drivers....long story short- i actually have to reboot and use os9 just for Quark...now thats a real bummer.
Now if InDesign would get their asses in gear (them and the printhouses that use quark) I would be in X heaven.
BTW...am i the only one that gets annoyed when iSteve calls it OS10"dot"1 ?!!!!

InDesign absolutely ROCKS compared to Quark. I am using it exclusively in OSX now. My print house doesn't accept InDesign files, but the do accept press-ready PDFs, which is totally the wave of the future... One file-- perfect color, embedded fonts and it outputs flawlessly. No more hunting for weird xtensions or worrying about missing something in preflight.
And I'm in optical alignment heaven!
InDesign is what Quark WISHES it was (for significantly less $$$).

Nope, I don't like that either. Nor do I like how he pronounces "Jag-wire." Nor do I like how he describes the 22" cinema display's resolution as sixteen-hundred by one-oh-two-four. And I think it's funny how he describes every application Apple writes as being the best in the world.
Well, so what. He's got a great mind and he's done great things for Apple. And at least when he claims that his apps are the best in the world, he means it and it's true!
That is not good it is BAD! Bad Bad Bad Bad!! What about all those old "classic" apps that will never be ported to os x...like sim ant? They are truly classics.

Sim Ant? That game sucked. I remember when I had it like when I was 8 or 9 years old. The other Sim games were cool though. My favorites were Sim Town and Sim City (also Sim City 2000).
[quote] Well, if you are using these great Classic-only apps, you probably have Classic installed as a bootable OS on another partition, so you don't really need another OS9 disk to come with 10.2. For those user who don't have a copy of OS9, then they probably aren't using these apps, and hence won't really miss them. Really, who doesn't have most of the old OS disks laying around somewhere? If you do, you don't need another and if you don't, why would you need one now?

good point, but OS 10.2 is a little early to be getting rid of classic entirely isn't it?
Since I have the os 9 cd that came with my imac it really doesn't matter that much now...but what about when someone wants to upgrade to a newer computer and os 9 is no longer compatible with it?
Easy installation and setup help get you up and running in minutes
Classic technology supports most of your current Mac OS 9 applications
?Built for Mac OS X? applications benefit from powerful new features

Maybe it doesn't include a separate OS 9 installation and boot CD - that would follow from the OS 9 is dead viewpoint. But, it still includes Classic compatibility. What isn't clear is: do you have to have OS 9 already to get Classic compatibility?
The death of OS 9 will only affect those who want something to bitch about. I installed a pre release of Jaguar and it destroyed everything on my disk. Half out of lazyness I never bothered to reinstall 9 and now that RealOne is out I have no motivation to. I haven't paid a thought since. If I had one of those lovely 80 GB HDs maybe I would consider dropping it in there but for now....nuh uh.
Photoshop Elements is my only remaining need for Classic. I swear, when it and Jaguar are released, I'm reformatting all 3 of my Macs and completely removing that crash prone, drama rinned OS.

Adobe has announced Photoshop Elements 2.0 for OS X
What if Jag-wire doesn't need OS 9 to run classic apps? There needs to be some way to run OS 9 apps if only to run initial installers to run the OS X patch (like UT, DII, etc). Hmmm. This could be something of a problem.

By the way Sim Ant is the BEST game ever made

Also a good point. But, the issue here is, why no OS9 CD with Jag. The answer, I think, as I said, was that if you need Classic, you probably already have it.
If and when new macs can't run OS9 is another issue. I think it would be possible for a new Mac to not be able to boot OS9, but still install Classic as an integrated environment as it is now. I think the next few versions of OSX will support Classic installation, but can't guarantee the hardware will support this for as long.
What does that have to do with Jaguar not coming with OS 9? I'm sure everyone that uses Quark already has OS 9...

I think his point is that Quark is dragging ass.

I see your point; but who needs UT and DII when you have Warcraft3, MoH, Wolfenstein...

Noone should be using OS 9 anyway... I haven't touched OS 9 since the day OS X was released...

Too bad for all those users still running OS 8...
My Quadra 650 is set up as a web and FTP server and is running OS 8. Good old machine and never had problems with it.
OS 8, Even I'm lol!
