Apple updates Front Row, QuickTime for iTunes 8
In sync with the release of iTunes 8, Apple on Tuesday also released matching updates to its companion software for Macs.
QuickTime 7.5.5 is available for Leopard (64.7MB) and Tiger (60.2MB) and improves compatibility in addition to fixing bugs with the media software.
Security is also a focus and sees 7.5.5 close holes that would allow malicious H.264, QTVR and PICT files to either crash QuickTime or run arbitrary code as a result of the fault; extra validation prevents these hostile videos from loading.
Front Row 2.1.6 for Mac OS X Leopard (12.5MB) updates the media interface to support the new iTunes and QuickTime updates.

I was able to manually install iTunes 8 and all is fine. But it seems as if this negates the perceived value of Software Update.
Yet it's not gone through yet.
I'm not sure what you meant by that. The link to download separately is posted, so why wouldn't Software Update pick it up as "new" software?
