iMac came out with G3 shortly after this they announced G4 in PM.

Well, when the iMac was introduced (middle of 1998), Apple was still selling _beige_ G3 machines. Apple introduced the Blue and White G3 machines around Jan. 1999.
The G4's then came in Sept. 99. So Apple ran with G3's in both the iMac and Pro machines for over a year.
Too soon. Maybe in February, but to have another announcement so soon after launching the iMac is marketing stupidity.
You want to maintain momentum but also not to take away the spotlight from the iMac. People are still buzzing about the iMac with it and Jobs on the cover of Time.
Right now, people are ready to place that iMac order. If you start hyping the Pro Towers, you can only confuse and add more factors to a customer decision making process.

Well, it would seem to me that for the first time there will be overlap in the consumer and professional lineups. Maybe the low end tower is a speed bumped G4 or G5, but it is priced at what would look more expensive than a similarly equipped iMac. You pay for the expandability that the tower offers.
As an aside... for me the pci slot expandability is becoming less and less of an issue. AGP is a MUST, and maybe one pci slot, but a ton of peripherals are being moved to Firewire or USB, and the power of the processor chips is supplanting the need for processing type pci cards, ala FCP3.
At this point the lack of any update a MacWorld suggests that the next update will be substantial. At MWNY in July they had nothing so we got the lame 733 to 867 boost. If that's all they are going to do, it would have already happened.
(Nice logic, eh?)
In other words, I'm pretty certain Apple could've boosted speeds up another 167Mhz at MW if they wanted to. Since they chose not to, something bigger must be on the way. The delay could be for several reasons. Inventory, marketing, chip supply, you name it.
That PowerMacs have gone to a 10 day build time at the Apple Store is suggestive too, as is the $999 733Mhz G4s available at the UCLA bookstore that someone else pointed out.
Something new is coming, and I'm betting we'll see a larger than 167Mhz jump. G4+ or G5 is anyone's guess.
Info is per an Apple employee. Could be completely wrong, but it makes sense. If all they were going to do is speed bump the G4 they probably would have done it at MacWorld.

I dissagree.
They will sell enough iMacs to ignore the fact that they are canabalizing the pro line until a major update.
And it simply wouldn't make sense to update the entire line at one event.
Apple likes to (wisely) announce something several times a year.
Jan 22 seems plausible, but still seems a little early to me.
We'll see, but i don't expect we'll see new PowerMacs till Spring.
Personally I have decided to buy a G5 whenever they come out. Be it next month, be it next December. I won't upgrade until then. The longer Apple waits, the longer I'll keep my money.
What would be funny is if in hindsight this delay in announcing new Powermacs made so much sense : They aren't ready yet, we want to focus on the imac, we want to give the rumors sites a back handed slap. It might make sense from many perspectives.

well it looks like spymac was right. It's always funny when that happens

Spymac isn't right until Apple announces new Powermacs next week. Until then, these rumors are all BS.
The low key nature of this event suggests to me that these Powermacs will not have a new Mobo, they will use the same 7450 G4s, with the only change being CPUs clocked a bit higher. That is, IF there is an an event next week. I'm not inclined to believe that there is.

AtAT predicts new Power Macs by the 'end of the month'.

Just Ghz Apollos according to them, no G5.

G4 @ 1.0 Ghz in February
G4 @ 1.x Ghz in March
G5 @ 1.x Ghz in April
After all Seybold is for Pros like the PowerMacs.

My money is on the G5.
It makes sense. A move to DDR would introduce a much greater leap forward in performance than the (probably 20%-30%) MHz increase will suggest.
I'm thinking the machine will be an Apollo. That way, if it's a G5 I'll be pleasantly surprised.
