I was wondering if anybody out there would like to tell us when can we expect a Windows kit (software/hardware/etc) for the iPod?

Hardware? Why would they need hardware? Any PC with FW should be able to run it with software ...
the kind, rational, forgiving part of me wants apple to release ipod for windows to show the rest of the world how high quality hardware and software can work together in an elegant little package. the enlightened side of me hopes this leads wintel users to consider the advantages of apple and ultimately of OSX.
the sadistic, angry, vindictive part of me would love apple to either ignore windows users completely, or release crippleware that makes everything slow and inconvenient. i realize this is utterly self-defeating and apple shouldn't go this way...but a part of me is still looking for some payback..... mac users have had to endure years of crappy, bug-ridden software ported by companies that didn't give a rat's ass about anyone not using windows.time to give them a taste of their own medicine.... buaha!

...this is really hard when I consider my family - I'm the only rational individual of my family, the only Mac user.
I read a few days ago somewhere that a third party has already made a software solution for iPods on Windose machines, but I don't know where. I assume it was on Macnn or MacCentral.
Look, Apple didn't create the iPod in order to make money off iPod sales. They created it in order to make the Mac platform more attractive. I guarantee you that if they ever were to come up with more digital devices (which they probably will) they will ignore windows as well. I love laughing at people who druel over the iPod but complain that they have a PC, and don't even have FireWire.
And Sony, which is being run by weirdos, does not include 6-pin FireWire on most of its desktops or laptops. This makes it impossible to charge iPod while also transferring music. In order to charge your iPod, you would be forced to either 1) buy a FireWire card or 2) use the AC adapter.
Sony is weird that way. A lot of consumer level Compaqs now come with Firewire ports. Those machines suck and are ugly, but they do have two front accesible firewire ports.

LOL, I love it! Ha!
Yeah, make the windows drivers "crippleware", and enable about 70% of the features on the Windows version. But leave the controls anyways, so when Windows users try to use a Mac-only feature, they get an error message, "This feature is supported on Macintosh hardware only". LOL!
Even better would be if Apple took a page from M$'s book on software design for the Mac platform; design the Windows version of iTunes to slowly degrade over time, so that after a year or so it is a useless pile of crapware and the user is left with no choice but to wipe it from their drive and reinstall it. Better yet, make the drivers in such a way that they destabilize the entire operating system. When users call Apple tech support to complain, tell them it's the fault of Windows, and then charge them for the tech support. LMAO!
But seriously:
I think it is so cool of Apple to ignore Windows users with the iPod. Only Apple, only Steve Jobs, would do something so extraordinarily cool! Most businessmen would go for the short-term profits of selling the iPod to windows users...but I think Apple is gambling on the long-term conversion of windows users to the Mac platform.
the hurt, puzzled, dejected look on the face of your typical windoze user when he/she finds out ipod is macintosh only. what do you MEAN it isn't for windoze. EVERYTHING is supposed to work with windoze!
gotcha. aaah, sweet, sweet payback. it's a terrible thing to want something you cannot have.
Because PCs users are buying mac just because of the iPod. Yeah apple could make more short term profit but after people are forced to use macs (with much cooler os to Micro$oft windowz, fasters processes to amd and intel, easier to use than PCs etc) there would be a bigger % share of the computer market for macs. Therefore Apple wins years after the iPod.
I ammostly echoing the sentiment of others, but I think Apple should keep the iPod Mac only.
The digital hub strategy will only work if Apple can really stand out among the many imitators in the PC world. Aple needs great applications that only work on the Mac.
Revenge is sweet, but Apple should not release anything that is intentionally 'broken.' Amongst other things, Apple should work hard to build their reputation as a SW developer (apps I mean).
And Sony, which is being run by weirdos, does not include 6-pin FireWire on most of its desktops or laptops. This makes it impossible to charge iPod while also transferring music.

All you need is a sony style iLink cable to 'normal' firewire converter. Its a cable that on one end has that mini iLink port and on the other has a 'big' normal port. I've used them on various occassions. The problem with Sony Firewire is that most of their implementations are powerLESS. To run my FW Lacie Pocketdrive with firewire I had to get an iLink to Firewire cable PLUS had to keep the power plugged in to the Pocketdrive to make it work. Besides that it worked fine.
Remember, Firewire is Apple's implementation of a standard IEE1394... iLink is the Sony implementation of the same standard.
But you do have a point... they are run by weirdos
friend of mine went to the Apple store to ask the same question- she has a PC at work with all of her mp-3's on it (time on her hands, T-1 line, napster) with no way to get it onto her Mac at home. The sales person said that Apple most likely wouldn't release anything themselves because "we'd rather sell a pc-user an iMac and an iPod than an iPod and some software that we would have to support. We'd be getting calls from all those windows users with all their windows problems"

If you want to enjoy the iPod you have to enjoy the whole mac experience
Because they want it to be a "Mac-Thing" or a mac experience.

I loved that.
...would it make sence for Apple to make an iPod with USB (or USB 2.0)?

That would be too slow to transfer 5 gigs worth of mp3s. Not to mention take the 'breakthu' out of the iPod's description.
