I just discovered something pretty nifty. I'm using Jaguar and don't know if this was in the previous versions of Mac OS X.
If you hold the option key and press any of the three volume keys, the Sound panel opens up in System Preferences.
I love my Mac OS X.

Or a way to assign function keys that I'm unaware of ?
(running X.2)
Speaking of Volume keys ... is there any keyboard way to control volume on an old (266mhz G3) iMac ???

Get a Pro Keyboard.

Nice that is cool... thanks for pointing that out....
(adopts Homer voice) Mmmm OS X programmers - always thinking two steps ahead!

And a USB card. The problem with that set-up is this...
With a USB card, the keyboard won't be powered up until some ways into the start-up process, defnitely after the period when you can use key combos like Command-Option-O-F, Command-Option-P-R, Option and stuff like that.
Here I thought I'd found something new.
At least it's new to ME.
Well, shiggity shiggity shwa.

at least
I use it with my MacAlly keyboard, since I can't stand the pro keyboards (they look great, but they are freaking flat.)

This is off topic, but what does Command-Option-O-F do?
Did you say that he said he was running an old 266 MHz iMac? Not a beige G3, but when I heard "old 266 MHz" that was immediately what came to mind. The iMac has built in USB. The Pro Keyboard will work fine. My brother used one on his Bondi iMac until he got a beige G3. I'll have to tell him about the problem with startup key combos for that before he gets a USB card for it.

Yep, you're right... he said iMac.

It brings you to the Open Firmware prompt. You will almost never need to use this particular key combination. OF is a bit like the RISC motherboard version of a normal PC BIOS. It holds all sorts of info like "where's the boot disk?" and "Who killed Laura Palmer" If the OF becomes corrupt you can reset it to defaults by typing "reset all" at the prompt[and hitting return], then continue the normal boot process by typing "bye" at the prompt [and hitting return].
This is also off-topic to some extent, but it doesn't seem to deserve a special one in itself. I tinkered with the Airport utility and set up a closed network for my Airport base station. When I updated the Network pref pane, to look for the specific network, the little Airport menu item slid to the left and the name of the new network scrolled across the space created like a ticker-tape (like iTunes does).
The character palette in the menubar is pretty nice too.
I'm just amazed at the level of detail and subtlety that they've put into Jaguar and the revised applications that came with it.

D'oh, missed that part.
