Strategery: a turn based strategy game for iPhone
With American politics seeing a big shake-up soon, it is an unfortunate fact that soon we will no longer be exposed to a continuous stream of oratory failure. So imagine, if you can, my pleasure when I caught sight of Strategery ($0.99, App Store), a new turn based strategy puzzler for the iPhone and iPhone Touch.
Let's get it out of the way first: it goes without saying that this is a good-looking app, and it helps enormously. It's possible that without looks like these, nobody would give a second glance at something like Strategery, but luckily the interface is good enough to pull you in and show you how fun the game is as well.
Despite Strategery's simple looks, the game has a surprising capacity for depth that combines tactics and plain old luck. The idea of the game is that you possess a country with a capacity for 7 'armies' (circles/hexagons). When you fight a neighbouring country, the armies do a diceroll to determine who wins, with every army you control counting as another dice, creating a higher diceroll. As you capture other countries, your empire expands and so does your capacity for producing more armies.
The game gives you the options for four different difficulties, from easy to brutal, and three different sizes of randomly generated maps to play on (bit of a shame that the pinch zoom is poorly implemented in the larger maps). There is also the option for hotseat style playing of the game with your friends, though online is an obvious future feature.
Strategery is currently at an introductory price of $0.99, so grab it while you can.
