Will I run into trouble if I back up my Applications folder (some of my apps aren't in my user folder) and then simply drag these back into my new install from an exterior hard drive? Or should I fully reinstall the apps?
I am most concerned about the following upgrades on my iBook. Photoshop 7 , Microsoft Office X and VPC 5.
Appears I may need to reinstall the previous versions again and then reinstall the upgrades?
i did a drag and drop of Virtual PC 5 and Office. Photoshop i just reinstalled, i didn't care that much and wanted to be sure i didn't miss any odd font files.
Most applications you'll be ok with just dragging and dropping. Some you won't. In particular photoshop, illustrator and some other big apps. In general, if the application is dragged from a disk to your applications folder (like office, any omni app), you can just drag and drop them back after an install. But you shouldn't have to back up your applications at all since you should have the installation cd's some place. Right?
Yes, I have the CD's. Just wondering if drag and drop works. Seems like a pain to reinstall Office 2001 and then upgrade to Office X and then get the service release. Same with photoshop.
I guess if I tried drag and drop and it didn't seem to work, the upgrade CD's would recognize a version not making me install the previous OS 9 versions?
I want to do a clean install of jaguar but my superdrive mac came with iDVD and I don't want to lose it as it wont be included on Jag, so, do I drag and drop the iDVD icon to a cd and burn a copy and will this copy work ?

I had the same question, there is no install for it on a cd that came with the computer, except maybe the software restore cds, but i dunno how to access just idvd in there.
So i backed up the idvd folder on a dvd with the rest of my backup files. Once jag is installed just drag it over to your HD, also just to be safe I D/L and installed the idvd 2.1 update from apple.com, I thought if any files were missing this would fix it. But its works fine either way, I lost the idvd icon though, its just a application icon now
There is no way I'm doing a clean install on my Macs. I need to get OSX onto 10 different computers and it would take forever to wipe/reinstall on each machine.
I'll do archive and experiment w/a new user.
On a side note...I think the archive option is a step in the right direction. But, Apple needs to make this upgrade process seamless. I cant imagine trying to explain to my Mom (3 states away) how to move files in the Library.

Thanks T I.
This is a questionthat's been puzzling me 'cos as you know all you get with your Mac is a bundle of "application" CDs with no listing of each ones contents and then they have to be installed in the corresponding order (1 ttrough 7) no way of finding the app you want
So...when wanting a clean install you'd be working with "old versions" of apps on install CDs while Jag has new versions MINUS iDVD!
Couldn't Apple include an iDVD install disc with ordered copies of Jag for registered owners of a superdrive Mac common sense I would think.
You might try to using Pacifist to dig into those CD package installers and see what's in them.

That is SO much better then windows.

Is that sarcasm or you being serious?
Under my home library folder there is a folder that says "application support", but they're not the applicatins themselves.
I just want to make sure I get everything right before undertaking a clean install
