Pretend what! Of course Apple's OSes can do multitasking.....potentially. But Palm has beat them to it. And no one knows when and if Apple will have such 'features' in their products.
You mean no one knows when Apple is going to extend multitasking/background processes to 3rd parties. The disconnect here is that you posit Apple doesn't have the technology when in fact iPhones do multitask but not at the same holistic level shown by the Palm Pre.
I actually welcome this decision by Apple in the inaugural launch of the iPhone because now they have more data about how the apps can communicate and run processes and what impact that has on UI and battery life.

It just doesn't make any sense to talk about anyone beating anyone to anything based on demoes of a product at least 6 months out.
How about we wait until there is a shipping Pre, then we can evaluate who beats who, and on what basis.
The problem with creating a CDMA iPhone is that compared to the GSM/3G Market, there aren't very many CDMA customers at all. CDMA is a dying technology, and investing millions to crest a CDMA iPhone just doesn't make sense because of the limited number of customers you'd be targetting.
HAHA! You're kidding right? In the US there are a shitload of CDMA customers. Verizon, Sprint/Nextel, Alltel all use the CDMA network. I wasn't talking about Apple making a world phone here. I'm speaking of a US only phone. Verizon's network is one of the best networks in the US (arguably the best network in the US). They're highspeed network (EV-DO) network is unparalleled in the US. Nobody comes close to it as far as coverage, certainly not AT&T/T-Mobile. Hell, even me being out in the sticks can get their EV-DO highspeed network. It will be 20 yrs before AT&T's 3G network makes out here.
And if you want to make that argument..there aren't very many GSM customers in the US either. I know I'm being selfish here, but I could care less what Apple does for a European/Asian phone. I'm sure people living overseas thinks the same about the US.
We also haven't yet seen the Pre perform its multi-tasking with heavy duty apps that the iPhone uses. Its its only webapps then that's no different than what Safari can do on the iPhone.

Not potentially, it does it right now.
How many times do folks have to tell you that OSX multitasks natively?

I can't hear you because of the SYNERGY.

Is that a Christian rock band?
