Good to know Dell is finally turned around and want to make "a toy story" of its own. (remember the 2001 interview CNBC conducted with Mr. Dell?)
"CNBC then commented that Apple's CEO, Steve Jobs, had compared the new iBook to Dell's own consumer portable offering. She said that Mr. Jobs had said the iBook was better than Dell's portable because it was smaller, lighter, and had more features than Dell's (this is where it gets a little cat-fightish). Mr. Dell replied with "All I got to say to Mr. Jobs is 'I loved Toy Story 2,'" in a reference to Mr. Jobs other job (no pun intended) as the CEO of animation studio Pixar."
I disagree. As much as I think most Dell products are crap, they sell quite well overall so I guess people either like crap or disagree with the idea that Dell only makes crap.
Third option: people hate crap, think Dell makes crap, but crap is better than nothing if you need it.
I bought a Dell Axim PocketPC when it was first released. It took Dell about the same amount of time to release the Axim after the other PocketPC makers as it would be after the first iPhone if they release something in the timeframe this article suggests. The Axim was thicker and heavier than everything else, but I could buy one after saving up allowance and some holiday money without it taking an unreasonable amount of time.
So, if they manage to hit that part of the market, they could actually do pretty well. Even if it's not the coolest smartphone, if it's a smartphone option that's cheap enough to be free with subsidy, many people might choose it over another simpler free phone.
(I've also seen many businesses and schools that buy Dell only because they only want a simple workstation for simple tasks at a good value, and everything else seems too nice, even if they could get something else for about the same price.)
That's exactly what I was thinking. Haven't they been down this road before and ended up with some less than amazing (to put it mildly) results?
indeed. they carried the 2nd ipod and maybe the third gen ipods, people bought tons of them with the usual dell coupons. then the dj started, ipod was expelled from the dell site and never returned ever since. neither the dell dj. did it even managed to get a 2nd gen edition?

What's funnier, the idea of Dell making hardware that can compete with the iPhone, or the idea of them building a competitive OS from scratch?
Ha, agreed. Exactly what I was thinking.
Android is Linux.
Starting over would be writing your own Monolithic Kernel/Micro Kernel.
Forking is what they would do.
Yes, but I meant more in the Palm Pre webos kind of start over rather than use the google stack.
The point is that Dell doesn't have to write an OS from scratch. There are several they can use/license. Even winmo.
Personally, I would start with BSD over Linux on an embedded device. Or in general really.
Seriously.... I laughed out loud when I read this...
Dell are doomed.... "beleaguered" no less
Fools....
