The iPhone is quickly become a favourite tool amongst musicians and DJs who sometimes just want to crank out some sound quickly, without going through the fuss of picking up an instrument or opening up their laptops - this is partly thanks to the iPhone's versatility with applications, but maybe more to do with the device's tactile controls, which make using an iPhone (dare I say it?) a pleasure.

For those in need of making some noise this week, there are two new and noticeable offerings, the first of which is DESKTOP DRUMMER ($1.99, App Store) by MorokoshiMan, a simple drum machine app.

The developer seems to have made this app primarily for those sorts of people who can't keep their hands to themselves in the class or office, and always end up drumming their desks or co-workers. DESKTOP DRUMMER offers to give you the ability to do all that, but with the added bonus of being able to pipe it through headphones, as well as a multitude of percussion sounds available to your eager fingertips, from tom toms to kicks to snares - with one touch combos to go too. More speculative app buyers may look at the green LCD screen bearing the words 'Rock Kit' - suggesting there may be more kinds of kits to come in future.

If you're in need of something a little more complex, technoBox ($9.99, App Store) is a self described "virtual techno studio" that features award winning emulation engines based on the 303 bass machine, along with the 808 and 909 drum machines.

With a glossy and glowing interface that allows you to manage sessions and easily sequence your patterns, or even string together a sequence live - technoBox is one of those powerhouse music apps that can make you entertain the idea of the iPhone as a part of a production lineup. It also comes with a bunch of preset patterns to start you off.
