As you may or may not know, the tyre company Michelin also does fantastic business in producing their Michelin Guides, which over the course of a century have become the definitive rating system for restaurants in Europe - the fabled three Michelin stars denoting the very highest honour that a restaurant can attain.

The red guide has today found itself in the world of the App Store, with Michelin Guide Restaurants (Europe) ($18.99, App Store) and a cheaper edition that contains only reviews for restaurants within France ($9.99, App Store - the most thoroughly covered nation in the Michelin Guide.

The Michelin Guide has always been a very reliable review system, partly due to the completely anonymous and undercover Michelin inspectors - but maybe moreso now that the App version of the Michelin Guide allows users to write and share their own reviews of the Restaurants that they visit, giving a wider spectrum of voices to tune into.

The app retains the Red styling of the normal Michelin guide within the iPhone's usual interface conventions, and although there are some slightly garish icons in place, the rating symbols have carried over well and the layout is generally well thought out. You can also sort restaurants by distance using the iPhone's inbuilt GPS, which is a handy touch for those on the road.

Then again, this is the Michelin Guide - there is no institution quite like it. Whether you are going to Europe on a holiday, or are already there, this is a great addition for anybody who believes that they are what they eat. Americans should consider that Michelin has published Red Guides for San Francisco and New York for two years now, so iPhone versions of these are undoubtedly not too far from being released.

The collection of all Codes is much more useful. And it is cheaper as far as I remember.
