I think the world needs to move away from the idea that completely unfettered, free markets are a replacement for governments, morality and just about everything else. It's based on the flawed concept that the "survival of the fittest" is the one rule of nature, when all evidence indicates it just isn't. This erroneous and over simplistic view of evolutionary biology is being used as a handy prop for a pre-existent desire to do whatever the heck one wants IMO.

My iPod doesn't care which account the songs on it are tied to. Your computer needs to be authorised, but the iPod does not.
If you want to see what's available on the Japan store (or any of the others), go to the iTunes store front page, scroll to the bottom where there's a drop-down list of countries and switch. The only gotcha I've found is that if I dock my iPhone after having logged on to my Japan account, then the iTunes store my iPhone connects to is the Japan store instead of the US store. To switch it back, I only have to switch iTunes (on my Mac) back to the US Store, then dock my iPhone again.
Obviously my iPod Classic doesn't have this issue (since there's no access to the store from the device).

If an American hacker found the algorithm he would sell it to a shady business person who would then generate thousands of codes and create a ponzi scheme of iTunes digital codes and it would all be great until apple flipped the switch and the whole thing came crashing down bringing with it the insurance companies who were insuring bogus iTunes codes.

Well, the difference being that in the US, or pretty much anywhere outside of China, Apple would have a fighting chance of using the legal system and law enforcement to shut it down. The Chinese government has shown repeatedly that, other than the rare "saving face" efforts, they have little interest in enforcing internationally recognized standards of patents or intellectual property rights (or food safety, elimination of toxins in toys, etc).

Actually, yes. If you have a problem with China's laws there are only a few things you can do and one of them is not to buy products made in China. Though that would probably be impossible for anything computer related.
