After a restart desktop items wont appear.....

I was using JavaDC because I was downloading a movie and I had to keep on trying to find alternate sources for the download because of various reason. Then I decide to restart and when I do none of my Desktop icons appear. All I see is the Dock, and the menu bar. How can I fix this? This is starting to worry me... I hope I didnt get a virus from DC... If I need to reformat then I'd be mad....

Thanx in advance for all help.

Heres an update: I booted into OS 9 and i rebuilt my HD's desktop file. I then restarted back into OS X 10.2.1 and MY ICONS STILL DONT APPEAR!!!!!! How can I solve this problem without have to do a clean install?

Rebuilding the desktop in OS9 has nothing to do with OS9's "Desktop Folder" and certainly not OSX's ~/Desktop. What that does is rebuild the database files that OS9 used to store application icons and file mappings to said applications. OSX does not keep these same database files; so, it has no effect.

First, you need to use a more description thread title. That might draw members in to respond better than a simple "this is weird" type phrase.

Second, have you tried repairing the disk via "/sbin/fsck -y" or by the Disk Utility app on the OSX Install CD?

Third, I really doubt you are the victim of a virus on OSX. You'd be the first since there are *no* known viruses that affect Mac OS X.

How about going to your finder prefrences. Click on

the desktop click on the finder in the menu bar. Then click on the finder preferences. A list on options should appear. Your hard drives are probly

    unchecked on show on desktop

Hold down command-s during startup (Apple key and s key) to enter single user mode. When the scrolling text stops, enter the command /sbin/fsck -y to repair the startup volume. If any errors are reported and fixed, keep entering the command (using the up arrow key) until no more errors are reported. Finally type reboot to boot the machine.

Ok... I did that. It keeps telling me that "Moon Kingdom appears to be ok". Moon Kingdom is what I called my hard drive.

Have you tried dechecking and then rechecking them, or doing a Clean Up from the Finder View menu, or switching to a lower resolution and switching back again (perhaps the items are on the desktop, but off screen).

What happens if you try and add new icons to your desktop, files or folders for example?

Have you tried moving a file directly into your home/desktop folder to see if it appears on the desktop?

I assume that's not what he told the Apple rep.

Perhaps it's a permission problem with your desktop folder. I'm sure a re-install will fix it.

There's an idea...hit command-shift-h in the Finder and get info on your Desktop, make sure you are the owner and the privs are set to read and write.

    Everyone thanx for your suggestions.

Spart I've done exactly that... Ive checked the desktop folders permissions.. they were f*cked up. I fixed em but that didnt solve the problem. Im just gonna keep backing up my stuff and I'll reinstall tomorrow, Monday the 4th of November and this time it'll be a clean install... this now screwed up version im running now was an upgrade from my previous 10.1.5. Ive tried to log out and re-log in after changing the desktop permissions... but that didnt work... Ive even tried restart and guess what... THAT DIDNT WORK!!! grr.. im not looking forward to having to intialize my HD even though my stuff will be backed up. Ive gotten so used to things as they were.... Oh well..... If theres anyone here who can think of something that can fix my problem Id be very grateful.

    Thanx....

Have you tried setting up a new account and logging in with it?

It may just be that your Finder is corrupted...

Burst of inspiration...I remember doing this with TinkerTool. If you don't have it, download it.

Make sure the Use Desktop option thing is on...not sure what it's called (as I no longer have it installed.)

I remember when I did this that when I clicked on the desktop it sounded the alert, like you reported. Only instance I can remember that ever happening. Maybe your Finder prefs got hijacked...
