No probs with 10.2.2, got a duel 800 /w a GF4 and no problems. If anything it finally fixed that annoying iChat bug. (where it disconnected) But I didn't see that mentioned on it's feature list.

OS X is half finished and as such tons of things are quite unacceptable.

    1. Third party driver support is terrible, Epson, QMS, scanners etc speak to QMS and ask them why there drivers don't work correctly, they will tell you that it is an OS issue.

    2. Lots of software just doesn't work under X, If you've got Toast try to use spin doctor. It won't run properly on many machines, although it is perfect under OS 9. Speak to Roxio and they will tell you that it is an OS issue, Apple to fix!

    3. Look at the probelms people are having with FCP3 and DP machines and Jaguar, again it looks like an OS issue.

    4. The GUI is more like glue, there are few games for X most require OS9 for speed.

    5. Most game controlers do not have OS X drivers.

    6. I see that spinning wheel often on some of my machnes for no reason, it just freezes for say 10-20 seconds and then carries on.

    7. On one machine MSN messenger gets slower and slower as a cnversation continues, in fact it gets so slow it can take 5-10 seconds to echo a single character.

All in all these problems looked at individually do not stop the machine from being used. In fact I use them all day everyday. However, it is foolish to say that there are no problems with OS X. It is a credit to developers that we have as much software for OS X as we do, because these companys have worked very hard to get around the problems with OS X. This is one of the reasons why when we get a point upgrade many apps stop working.

Apple needs to finsih this OS and give the all the third party developers in particular the hardware providors some decent support. I am not bothered about new iApps, what I want is a well supported working OS. At the moment we have a very stable OS but many third party programmes and drivers are simply broken.

Anyone who has a scanner is likely to be using Vuescan and anyone with an HP AIO will appreciate what I am talking about.

I love Apple products and I like OS X, but I am frustrated at the speed of its progress. Since 10.1 it seems that the pace of change has really slowed down.

My most usual problem with OS 10 is the confusion it has ewhen there is very little space left on the hard drive. Rather than saying something like 'not enough space on the hard drive' it happily consumes all available space, freezes and you have to restart.

If you were printing in classic when this happens then the job is still there because it is in a hidden temp folder and the system is noticably fragile.

Right now I use ipulse just to see how much hard drive space is left. It is the only program I have seen which updates the hard drive visually. I can't trust the information displayed under the icons because there is a definite lag for its calculations.

First, try removing any HP drivers you might use.

Second, take a look at /var/vm to see how many 80MB swap files you have. Immediately after a restart you should have one. If their number grows whatever you do, it may be the problem.

I also heard that Virtual PC devours virtual memory like there's no tomorrow.

i'm in computer hell after jaguar 10.2.2 and IE 5.2 updates. besides the entire system being sluggish and choppy, IE is 10x slower than before and always "freezes" whenever it feels like it, which is at least once per session, and force quitting is the only way out. when it does work, i get blank "gaps" in web pages and have to scroll up and down until the missing parts of the text appear.

other apps also "quit unexpectedly" a LOT. they also take forever to relaunch, and sometimes dont. i've never seen the names appear in red in the finder's force quit window before! restarting is necessary and only sometimes helps, but i need to do that very often now as opposed to almost never (i always leave my mac in sleep mode).

Most of them are general complains or observations (Addison, nosey) that are just about OSX in general and not specifically 10.2. Others are specific tech support issues like the bug with HP printers; that one is HP's fault, not Apple's.

To mac's girl and anyone else having problems:

Have you tried the "standard" fixes? Boot from the install CD and try to repair the drive. Also, use Disk Utility to repair permissions. This can fix all sorts of problems. Also, remove any haxies or other global tools/hacks. Regardless of what unsanity and the others may say, there are plenty of reports (including my own experiences) that show that these things can cause problems with the system.

Also, a question: how did you install 10.2? Clean, archive, or upgrade? Many people reported bugginess and slowness issues when using the upgrade option. From day one I have recommended to everyone to use the archive option. That installs a clean copy of your system while keeping your own files intact. The upgrade, on the other hand, leaves your old system folder intact, only replacing the files that wre changed as identified by the insaller. If you had some funky stuff in your system folder with 10.1, it will still be there if you use the upgrade option. That's why some people reported improved performance when using archive instead of upgrade -- the gunk from the old system folder was moved away before installing.

Lastly, if you have Norton Utilities, Systemworks, or Antivirus, remove it. The junk that Norton installs reportedly causes several problems and even induces kernel panics in some circumstances. Personally, I think the Norton tools for Mac OS X are garbage. If you want to use NU, I suggest running it off the CD when you need it.

    my experience with 10.2.2:

It works just fine. No major problems or weird behaviors here.

I'm experincing the same problem of a slowdown. I Boot up and it runs fine and slowly becomes less responsive. It slows dowm so much that become completly unusable. Forget about putting it to sleep overnight. I have reinstalled my software cleared up much of my avialble space on my hard drive, ran hardware test, checked the hard drive, clean intstalled the OS. After this and checking the boards, and watched the log as teh iMac boots up I have come to the conclusion that the problem is 10.2.2 and the Graphics card driver for the iMac and possibly the eMac. That is the Flat panel 15inch imac and possibly the emac. This is the 800mhz model and has 512mb of ram. I have several other macs all different running 10.2.2 without this problem so I think it is safe to say this is not an issue for all macs. Please if you are having this problem or have a helpful suggestion let me know. Does anyone know where I can get a better graphics card driver I notice it is not loading at startup yet I still have use of the screen. The graphics card driver is my best guess on the problem. If this exsits on the new iMacs like mine then Apple will have many switchers switch back. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

I finally uninstalled my HP AIO software and haven't had a problem slowing down since. Of course...makes it kinda hard to print or scan anything now. Hopefully HP will update the driver soon.

shit, guy at work here is having that exact same problem, and also happens to have an HP AIO.

i'll have him ditch the drivers today and see if that speeds things up. in the mean time i have no idea how he's going to print though.

After reading many of these posts I decided to wait on 10.2.2. Last week I used Software Update to update my Superdrive. Unfortunately, I had consumed a couple of refreshing beverages and accidentally downloaded 10.2.2. I threw caution to the wind and installed it.

I have a SP 733 tower and I have had no problems whatsoever. IE 5.2 works as well as it did before the upgrade. In Photoshop 7, I tried a radial blur (spin, best quality, Amount: 6) on a 10.8 MB image and it took 42 seconds. And no, I had not had any refreshing beverages when I timed the blur!

    You might check this out...

    Trouble with HP printer drivers slowing down your machine under Mac OS X 10.2.2? Apple has made an upgrade to a critical system extension <a href="ftp://ftp.apple.com/developer/Development_Kits/Mac_OS_USB/IOUSBFamily-1.9.2DDK.dmg.bin"; target="_blank">ftp://ftp.apple.com/developer/Development_Kits/Mac_OS_USB/IOUSBFamily-1.9.2DDK.dmg.bin</a>;

One person found removing HP Communications out of /Library/Printers/hp worked very well.

    Or this:

    # Slow Operation Due To HP Drivers

Are you using a Hewlett-Packard (HP) scanner or printer? If so, is your system unusually slow or sluggish and/or unstable, even after Repairing Permissions? If you are using an HP scanner or printer, the driver for these devices may be the source of the problem.

    Possible solutions:

? Restart your Macintosh and zap the parameter RAM by simultaneously holding down the keys

    Command-Option-P-R during startup.

? Uninstall the HP printer driver and use Gimp Print instead. (See item #12 below.)

? Uninstall the HP printer drivers and use the free HPIJS driver instead of the HP printer driver.

    Or this:

If OS X 10.2 Jaguar does not include a driver for your printer, try Gimp-Print.

I have done a few things since my ill fated garbage screen of death (Genious bar) which have made things much more stable recently.

Firstly, no haxies in my closet. Not even Shadow remover or windowshade...

Secondly, reinstall the drivers I used before after the installation (just in case something gets lost that is important)

Thirdly, limit the shuffling of Apple applications from the applications folder, because they do not get updated unless they are there (most third party apps can be on other partitions)

And, lastly, if you find yourself force-quitting an app more than once in a day (mail had a problem with graphiconverter picture, for instance) restart your machine. I find that restarting clears up a lot of the hesitations for button clicks and window movement, and I could care less about the 'uptimeness' of my system...

Oh yeah, and start migrating to OSX versions of the programs as you can afford it. I am a bit suspicious of how classic behaves yet, but it is there if I absolutely need it (Greg's Browesr, for instance)

There's defiantly no slow down there on my windows 98 machine it took about the same time to do a 206kb radial blur.

Does 10.2 boot faster than 10.1? 10.1 is kind of slow.
