Honestly I think there are some serious politics on this one. First i think the new MPB 2.66 and 2.93 can take them and actually utilize 8gbs but i think the 2.4 cannot and Apple screwed up in the beginning on that one and has to stick to the story line. Because the previous models 2.8 and such can't either but just these two new ones can and they would have mud on there face if only 2 units can out of 5 that have been released since November. I think they even went as far as telling there ram vendors to stick to this theory as well. There would be a lot of unhappy campers if Apple actually supported the 2.66 and 2.93 with being able to take 8gb. I have 6gb in my 2.93 and I may just buy the damn 4gb chip anyway and if there is no performance gain over the 6gb I have than just sell it. They certainly work with 6gb and I living proof of that and my old 2.4 2006 model as well had 6gb on it. I can't see how the 17 can and the 15 cannot except for sales and the 17 always was behind in sales to the 15. This was a way for Apple to make more sales on the 17 inch. Not sure how long this post will last before it gets deleted but this is marketing pure and simple. There is no other theory in my mind. Anyway whats the worst that can happen it don't work correctly than rip it out if it does not. But that extra 2gbs of Ram is what I want and need so damn the torpedoes I will get a extra 4gb chip here soon. Unless someone can actually proof to me on paper the performance negative hit it will take than I going forward. Let me add I would love to see someone that has 8gbs and show me the performance gain over 6gb and i will buy you lunch. LOL
Just wander if any luck with 8GB upgrade for MBP 2.53?
Thanks.

The engineer told me that there was "a very good chance" that the 8GB RAM would work with the 2.53GHz because he was not aware of any major changes to the memory controller, but that Apple doesn't go back to test older systems.
So we're back to square one, I guess. Who wants to test it out on their 15" 2.53 GHz MBP?
I don't know too much about the difference between ECC and non-ECC, but there is a price difference and Apple only sells ECC memory. From what I've read about it, ECC isn't really important for average users.
A kit just means it's two 4GB DIMMs; there is nothing else besides the RAM chips. This is universal language when talking about RAM upgrades (just look it up at any store), so Apple isn't being misleading or confusing here.
On Monday, I will install 8GB or DDR3 RAM in Macbook Pro with 2.53 processor, and finally let the world know. So disappointed that so many users, and no one can give such a expertise.

Out of curiousity, what do you need 8GB for? Photoshop, Aperture, Final Cut, Calculator ?
So this is the end point: Macbook Pro with 2.53 processor works absolutly great with 8GB or RAM. Ram kit was ordered from OWC for total of $665.99
Out of curiosity, what work do you do that requires 8GB RAM? I have 4GB and that is more than enough for all the apps I have running, but I don't do any graphical work on my machine.

Apple pulled 15" 2.66GHz memory upgrade options?

Yep.. It's not there anymore!! \
I guess Apple does read AI after all!

Thanks for the info. I will buy it when the price drops to $200 around July.
