733 low end? Is Apple finaly going to offer a $599 tower for business?

Keeping a 733 seems hard to believe, given the iMac at 800. The dual Ghz is what I've heard from others on these boards who've seemed more in the know than the rest of us. But it seemed more along the lines of:

    good: under 1Ghz, single

better: just over 1 Ghz, single

    best: dual 1 Ghz

Makes sense. Although I automatically dobt the source.

Right. Disappointing. 800 bottom, 1 GHz top. MAbye there are enough 1 GHz chips to make the top one dual processor./

A year ago, the high end was the 733, which became the low end in July '01 with the introduction of the 867. Now that the new iMac has an 800, there is no way on earth (even with level 3 cache) that Apple is going to bring a new tower under 800. Given the logic steps described above, we can expect the current 867 to become the low end fairly soon... or better yet, a new bus rated at 200mhz, so:

    New G4 towers:

    900 x 1 (200 bus 4.5x)

    1000 x 2 (200 bus 5x) <-- AMD, P5 Wintel killer

    1100 x 1 (200 bus 5.5x)

This guy doesn't have any more credibility than the other 50 rumors sites - all of which are predicting significantly higher speeds.

Being conservative doesn't make your guesses more than guesses.

and if this is true anyway, that would mean we're probably not gonna see any increased bus speeds, DDR, etc.

    And that's pretty crappy, too.

I just don't see Apple underwhelming us with this info in a press release.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

    G3: dead

    G4: consumer line

G4e/Apollo: initially professional line, then replaced by,

G5: don't know if this will happen by MWNY, but it will definitely happen in 2002.

Apple is clearing out the 733 Towers. UCLA has a special on them in thier book store for $999 due to a "special purchase" The wouldnt have this if it were to continue to be the low end...

It would if the new 733 had a faster bus and faster graphics.

What Apple needs to do is quite irrelevant to what they are capable of doing.

If what this poster said about the towers is true, then the best Motorola can supply right now is the current G4 made using SOI, and maybe for only parts of the processor.

I'm not sure, but this isn't Apollo? I've always been under the impression that Apollo incorporated a 0.13µ die?

If true, I believe this means Apollo arrives in July and the G5 very late in 2002 or early 2003.

    not very likely IMO.

They won´t make the dual with the highest clocked chip (apart from all the other arguments with iMac being 80MHz etc.).

    bye.

this feature is blind to most consumers.. they will look at clock rate first.

What? We don't have enough threads with specious information here that we need to look to other places for specious threads?

    Wow.

Sounds about right. We are not going to see anything remarkable until the second half of this year. They even alluded to as much in the financial report. This is a transitional product to hold us over until the G5 arrives toward the end of the year.

Well, until AI starts posting I guess so. I see that SpyMac (yeah, yeah, I know) has been posting like crazy. They say the new iMacs will start arriving tomorrow. Greedy bastards but at least they are showing some effort...

    Bodhi

Got to tell you, I'm getting to the point that when I see you post I get a little unnerved.

First you post that we may very well not see any changes to the PowerMacs @ MWSF and the rest is history.

    Now this

But based on the comments a Motorola rep made to, who was it, Macworld?, that the next G4 would be SOI on 0.18µ this seems accurate.

Those specs would only be place holders and sure wouldn't bother me if it meant they could DROP THE PRICES!!

That would be blessing in disguise.
