See, this is why I am reluctant to write little hacks... people expect you to maintain them.

Anyway, I think it broke because Apple removed the private API from Mac OS X... so I don't think I could fix it if I tried.

Anyhow, that really is the only thing that seriously hampers the Classic experience, IMO. The alien UI and mixed up control behaviors can be expected, but seeing large chunks of the screen disappear, stall for a couple seconds, and then redraw is just awful.

Obviously Apple can make this work. It did in 10.1 since you could make that hack. The only question is where is the incentive for Apple to add back this functionality? I guess there really isn't much.

Believe it or not. SE 16 runs incredible stable under Classic. But not OS 9

Trust me. I have been using SE 16 under Classic since first day of 10.1 and I have ZERO quits/crash, even when I am opening huge files.

There is more activity on AppleTalk networks because AppleTalk is polling to find other devices. But it's not a substantial number of packets by any means, and it shouldn't do anything to slow a modern network. You may wish to look on Google to find some corroborative evidence to refute the ignorant claims of IT.

hahahaha thats gotta be bollocks, if they can't handle a switch to entourage or mail how would they manage a switch to an entirely new OS. Probably just an overexhagerate lie like you see all the time on these forums "OMFGGGF MY PENTIUMMM 2 200 TOTALY ROASTS MY DUAL g4" sure sure. Besides who could stand a toshiba aster using a Ti

this is what's killing AI. any time anyone dares to criticise apple they are made out to be a moron, liar or idiot. its thanx to those who blindly claim that macs are fine that we're in this mess. after all why should apple invest or innovate when enough people will put up with the status quo and more to the point defend them?

Our college has moved from ibooks to toshibas. why? entourage for one. the price for another, they scratch easy and they're underpowered. there. I've dared to criticise apple. feel free to flame away and defend the indefensible.

when more true mac fanatics out there are heard then and only then will apple listen. I would love for 9 and classic to disappear completely. However X has to undergo some serious changes if it is to replace an OS that while ageing and fraught with problems feels like a MacOS - empowering the user and not the IT professional.

What do the college's students to that needs the "superior" power of Toshiba laptops? Mind you, I like Toshiba laptops (when compared to other cheaper - in quality - laptops). But the iBooks are hardly underpowered. Their power is more than sufficient for their use.

If you don't understand the reasons why Entourage makes a poor Exchange client then you should keep your uninformed comments to yourself. FYI, Exchange uses a proprietary version of the MAPI email protocol and to make a compatible client you either have to be sanctioned by Microsoft (unlikely unless you are Apple and really really want it) or you ARE Microsoft. Or you can hack it like the guys from Ximian did with their Exchange connector for Evolution.

This is a touchy subject for people who NEED Exchange compatibility in their company.

Obviously you should keep your comments to yourself as you obviously have shown your ignorance. Proprietary version of MAPI? Ha!

You probably meant to say "proprietary version of IMAP". MAPI IS a proprietary API/protocol set written by Microsoft. And no, Exchange is not based on IMAP in any way, shape, or form. Its a push technology, not pull.

IMAP is a server based email system where the mail resides on he email server. That's the only similarity. As for the topic of the thread - Outlook sucks bullocks on both PCs and macs. Its got some great features, but its usability is horrible. And Office 11 makes it even worse, as far as I'm concerned - though the press go gaga over it because its new.

Wow, you're going bonkers over nothing since I never stated that MAPI was based ON IMAP only that Exchange servers optionally allow IMAP clients to connect to it. So MAPI is a proprietary email protocol developed by Microsoft. What the fudge does that change? And Outlook is vastly superior on PC's than it is on Macs. It's bloated obviously, but it has none of the performance issues the Mac version has.

Many old apps need to be reinstalled. AND you have to have a very slim extension/control panel sets to have a stable yet usable Classic.

This is my setting on extensions and control. Very slim, fast and totally usable

Since 10.2 came out, you can't even open most Control Panels, like TCIP/IP. I woudl like to open that one to make sure I was getting an IP in Classic but now I just have to trust that I am. I think one of the reasons Apple is making machines that only boot OS X is that they have the freedom now to play with classic with out bothering to update OS 9. In a year I expect Classic to be a single app much like X11 is now. No System Folder needed and the app would have just the bare essentials to use Classic Apps (no 3rd party extentions/control panels).
