The Dock

Two Apple applications that conflict with the dock when I have it pinned to the left of the screen are Terminal and Safari. Whenever either opens a new window it appears underneath the dock and it annoys the bejeezes out of me. Sure, you can click the green glob at the top left but you shouldn't have to. I can understand Safari doing it since it's still in beta... but Terminal?

And if I pin the dock to the right of the screen then it obscures the names of files and folders on the desktop.

Should the dock be improved or should applications be made more "dock aware"?

No it is not just IE. It is almost every app. Safari does it. Open a new window in safara and it will go beneath the dock. Stupid. You are 100% right. Little things like that turn people off so fast it is scary. The dock should be special space that no other app can touch.

One option is to use ASM to hide the dock in certain applications. The best application in regards to the dock is MS Word. It will not even come close to the dock. All apps should be like this.

None of my Cocoa apps open new windows with any part under the Dock -- well, excpet for a small sliver at the bottom of the iMovie 3 window. You can move the windows under the Dock, but they don't resize or open under it.

[added:] Oops, I notice the problem with the dock on the left someone emntioned. Otherwise...

I agree 100%. Dock behaviour should be consistent with the Finder, especially with the folders stored on the right hand side. Why don't the little plus and alias signs show up when I command- or option-drag into the dock? There's still a lot of work to be done to the dock IMO.
