I asked for the TOP OF THE LINE iMAC and after realizing it came with Bluetooth, Airport Extreme & 1GB of memory I had to back off a little. I'll eventually get all that but I don't want to pay for it now. But I still rule.
If I were to get a new iMac I would get the 1 internal stick that you cant change yourself upgraded to 512MB or I would go thru somewhere like maczone.com and get some free memory and stuff with it.
Just ordered the new 17" with 512 extra memory free from MacMall. You pay for it, and get a refund coupon for $49. Shipping across the US to my location was $46 UPS 2nd day. MacMall has a 2 year warranty. I purchased my iBook, which I have been using for over a year as my destop, from them as well. Should have it by mid week. Can't wait.

You can replace the Apple slot memory yourself. If you use 3rd party memory, voided warranty, if you use Apple memory all is fine, except the price.
I sure wouldn't pay Apple for 512 MB in that inner slot.
They want $200 US for the upgrade from 256 to 512.
You can buy the same 512 MB RAM chip from Crucial, probably the best around, for $79. I'm sure it can be found cheaper still - I didn't bother looking... it's great that I can make my point here even with Crucial, whos prices tend to be a bit high.
Plus, that's an additional 512, not just swapping the 256 for a 512 like you do with Apple. You might not have a need for the 184-pin DIMM, but it's better in your hands (to eBay it, keep it around, etc) than it is in Apple's warehouse.
Even with shipping on that chip you're saving $100 US. That's a pretty significant chunk of change. I've got a good relationship with the local reseller here, so I can have them do the upgrade for me for free... one of the benefits of dealing with local shops.
Personally I'd rather go out and pick up a couple new Xbox games than hand over $100+ to Steve.
i hope you didnt get internal bluetooth.... it is such a waste of money....

thank god you know what he is going to use his computer for so he can really count on your advice. At least you backed up your opinion... not
Big D, if you are into the new phones/pda's or are interested in future connectivity (wireless keyboards, mice, printers) then internal bluetooth will have you ready to go.
sigh.... $50 right away for an internal POS that you can only use on one computer that you probably dont even need right now anyway, Or $50 when you want to spend it for an external POS that you can bring with you and use on any computer.
For desktops, internal bluetooth (especially at $50 a pop) is a waste of money...

I didn't look around either, but i checked the Crucial web site and they have 512 MB for $139. I don't feel to bad having Apple solder-in 512 MB and then I'll get another 512MB made by Crucial. I've actually never heard of Crucial Memory before. You seem to swear by them so thanks for the suggestion. Also, I'll look aroung and see if I can find it cheaper somewhere.

Their memory is top notch (I've been using them for years). Companies such as Dell, Apple, Sony and so on often use Micron/Crucial memory in their computers (as well as other memory from other makers). They just put their own brand name on the chips so they can hike up the price 200% and 'suggest' you buy 'their' RAM. Apple doesn't make memory (neither does Dell and so on for that matter).
After reading this, i think that when i will order (in may) the I mac 17, i will buy the 256 MB model and i will add a 512 MB module : 784 MB will be sufficient for my needs.
Wew, it's all a moot point now. I got my 17" iMac today HA,HA,HA
(3 days earlier than FedEx originally predicted) and I am very happy with it. I know it has a fan but I'm amazed at how quiet it is compared to my old Rev. A 233 iMac.
Sweet machine.. I just set one up yesterday for a switcher friend of mine (replaced her 1996 Compaq fugly-tower). She was surprised to find out that a Dell system with a digital 17" flat panel was only $200 or so cheaper.

No. I'll be saving my money so that I can replace the ZMac Pro Keyboard with the the Biometric Interface Package - ZBiP - when it is released in Feb 2007.

That's what I did, and later I will get another 512mb from MacMall

just make sure to have the iMac tech manual on hand, as well as some thermal paste.
the biggest problem is that if you do it wrong, you get a pile of KP's due to overheating, and you void your warrenty.
(although i should mention that i've had iMacs worked on by Apple that i upgraded the internal RAM on. they didn't care)
