Question regarding the iMac from PC switcher.

Hi,

I first want to say I'm new to the Apple world so please go easy on me.

I have been looking at the Apple iMac Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 2 megs of ram and 500gig hard drive.

For now I will be running windowsXP. The question I have is first will Vista run on the iMac and if someone is running Windows on there iMac do you notice and problems with lagging or some software not running.

Also does Apple plan to realse a better dest top than what they currently have out or is The iMac it right now? The reason whyI ask is I want to buy my iMac in a few weeks, but if there is a newer version comming I will wait.

Thanks all.

To be honest it's tricky to know whether you should wait or not. There's a rumored event on February 20th, but going on initial instincts I have my doubts on an new iMac then. If I had to guess, i'd say we wont see a new iMac until July at the earliest. I had Vista installed, but to be honest I took it off as I never used it. If I wanted to play games or use some Windows propritary software, I'd install XP as I did before, but I never really have the time for games, a what little I do I just play Mac games. I'm not really a gamer. I may get a PS3 in December, but we'll see. Two years ago I was using Windows for years, and I've never looked back, I sold me first iMac the week before the new intel ones were due out, and I lost very little more as the have great resale value. You just have to trust that your decision will be a good one. Call it blind faith if you must, but I'm not misleading you, the Mac >> the iMac, is great in a hell of a lot of ways. In the end the two most important things to me when I think about it are stability and security, I feel safe, and it never break down. Enjoy!

From the thread title I though perhaps Apple had released a consumer app that converts your desktop to Islam.....

I have another question. When surfing the net with the iMac is there any problem viewing some webpages or do they load just as they would with a pc? What I mean is when your surfing the net and you come to a page that need activex or some plug in internet explore or windows will get it for you. Doe the iMac help you along to view pages. Also will the iMac reconize my wirelss router and wireless printer?

Lokk at me with all the annoying questions. The iMac has one drive built in the monitor. How do you make copie of cds from it. Do you load the first cd and copy it and than install the blank cdr and burn it or does it not work that way.

    Thanks again for any help.

99.5% of all web pages (i.e. those written to web standards) work just fine on a Mac. There are a few that are PC only though because the authors have chosen to do their own things. Safari (OS X's Web browser) can spoof IE for some of those but a very few won't work.

Yes you copy the CD eject the original and then burn a new one.

Wireless Routers are no problem at all and the printer shouldn't be - but it's worth checking the OEM's web site for the Mac driver.

    Safari, Apple's default web browser has better scores in the acid 2 test than any other browser;

    Looky!

This is true. IE has never cared much about standards, even at HTML 3.0 way back when.

Until last year, there were a lot of websites that did not support Safari. But still there are some sites that are slow or messy on Safari. Engadget comes to mind. Also, imbedded Windows Media files may not work unless you get the Flip4Mac plug-in.

    Alternate Web Browsers:

    Opera (free with ads)

    Shiira (free)

    OmniWeb (pay)

    Firefox (free)

    Camino (free)

SeaMonkey (also a mail and IRC application)

It's a shame you have no choice on the Mac platform.

This is looking very good. But 500GB is half a Terabyte of data!! That's a lot!! How much do you plan on storing on this machine ?? You must remember that if you have a lot of information, take the amount you need, and then realise you have to have an external backup if something happens to that hundreds of gigabytes of information. Also, when Leopard OS X 10.5 comes out in May this year, you will need an external hard disk anyway for a great autobackup "Time Machine" to work.

Consider getting the standard 250GB hard disk that it comes with, and then invest in a high quality, warrantied external 200+GB external drive like Lacie (FW400 is important, not USB2.0) for backups.

According to Patrick Norton, any hard drive over 250GB capacity will constantly be error correcting... that's why I'll only buy 250GB drives for now.

my recomendation to you as a new mac user would be to spend $99 and purchase procare at your local apple store. they will be happy to teach you everything you need to learn about your mac. you will get 52 classes a year once a week for one hour (less than $2 a class) one on one with a mac specialist and you will be able to do things withyour mac you never even though posible.

    good luck.

PS: here is a nice link to it. http://www.apple.com/retail/procare/

Ah ha! I think I remember reading about that. Can address more storage than can physically exist on Earth, right?

Some flavor of linux is developing it, if I recall correctly..

    How far off am I?
