Primary & Secondary DNS on a G3 laptop???

I have a Linksys wireless router on my desk top, plus an Orinoco wireless card on my G3 laptop running OS 9.2.2. All my settings are okay and getting a strong signal from the router, but can't get a connection. They told me to put in a Primary & Secondary DNS address, but I can't find the option anywhere even after doing a search for DNS.?? Do I have this and if so where?

OS 9? What is OS 9 again?

*cough* time for an upgrade *cough*

I can't remember exactly but I'd guess it would be in your control panels > TCP/IP. I seem to remember there being a box for DNS addresses.

Your right cough, but I can't upgrade it yet. It's my boys now. I found out that there is no DNS settings on 9.2, but they communicate together, just won't have a valid IP address???

Here is what the TCP IP control panel should look like:

    http://web.mit.edu/ist/start/mitnet/...ac8/index.html

This should be set to connect via your wireless orinoco card and usually you'd set configure to DHCP so that it automatically assigns an IP address from the router. Then any name servers go in the box at the bottom.

That's exactly what I did, but from what the Mac tech at Apple told me it wasn't giving me a valid IP address. when trying to go wireless with the router, but it works with the router connected directly to it.??

If it's working when wired up, the problem is likely the orinoco card. Do you have the right drivers installed for it? You can try this one:

This site seems to have quite a lot of info about the Orinoco card:

    http://www.penmachine.com/techie/airport1400.html#hw

They suggest restarting to get round the machine generating its own IP address.

You might need to put these DNS IPs onto the router itself. I forgot they have DNS entries too. If you go to your router setup page (often via a browser), you should see primary and secondary DNS inputs in the WAN setup.

Try 202.27.158.40 and 202.27.156.72 my ISP DNS. These will work if you have a working internet connection.

With network utilites, utilities folder, ping mine or your DNS IP, see if its there, if not do a trace route see where it ends, if so do a port scan for 53 to see if it a DNS server

strange your IP range is not a reserved standard private range

    192.168.1.x

    172.16.x.x

    10.x.x.x

Most people setup as IP 192.168.1.1, subnet 255.255.255.0, router 192.168.1.254 dns (name server) your ISP or router again, like 202.27.158.40

Try DHCP to see what IP that gives you.

Just remembered you have OS 9, to do a trace route, ping, port scan you need a free utility like OTTool

lookup country IP range 18.152.x.x and it does exist, your route needs re-setting up I think
