Powerbook and Sound
As I am always a day late and a dollar short, my problem occurred about 3-4 months after I quit working and returned to school. Which is why I still have a Powerbook and OS 10.3.9
One night, my computer made an awful, high pitched sound - it was the last sound the speakers made. I ran diagnostics and there is no recognition of the sound card. I first took my Powerbook to Apple with my Apple Care and they said there was no record of my AppleCare activation and they would not honor it. I went to the same CompUSA to ask for verification of purchase and they said they don't keep those files. I went back to Apple, all they said was "We get this a lot from people who purchased from CompUSA." Needless to say, Apple won't fix my computer unless I pay a premium - I can't extend my AppleCare, because my original was not activated (I mailed in the online registration for my AppleCare too, but 2 years and 3 thousand miles later, i can't find the proof.) Sorry to vent, I was really dismayed at all of that because I've been such a strong supporter of Apple products and the company. \ This is also the reason i haven't updated any of my Apple stuff - I was debating going PC for a while - at least I know I'm buying crap and bad service before I walk out the door of Best Buy or Fry's.
Also, When I went to the Apple Store, they told me they can't fix the sound card - they have to replace the entire motherboard - but online, i found directions for replacing the sound card in my Powerbook from home - i wouldn't attempt it myself, but it's odd the Mac repair people at the Apple Store said it can't be done and I found instructions to do it.
Anyway, 18 months later, still no sound.
I ran the AppleCare cd to fix any problems... I left it running and went to bed when it got too late... when I woke up, it said everything was fine except the sound, it couldn't fix it. (I'm working in the library at school right now and don't have the exact wording, it was something like "there's a problem with your sound that cannot be repaired.")
Is this a software problem? If I re-install my OS, could that fix the problem? I really don't want to wipe my HD if I don't have to, I have so much crap on there, and I'm sure I need at least 1/4 of it.
Any tips, hints, suggestions? I looked in the Apple FAQ and tried everything they suggested... I'm getting ready to go to MacGuys and ask them to fix it.
