iChat
OK, from the screen shots, its looks horrible. I hate to say it, but the two 'bubbles' talking to eachother from an icon of th eperson you are talking to is... gay (with no offense to gay people of course). It looks like software from the mid 90s when web apps were a new thing and they had all sorts of 'fun' ideas (like pictures of you or an avatar).
What I REALLY want is the ability to add other services... like Yahoo, ICQ, and especially (for me) MSN Messenger. I dont have a single friend on any other service except messenger
What do you guys think of it (from what we know)?

now, honestly, if you're going to go to the trouble of writing "with no offense to gay people of course" couldn't you just find a different word to use, like, I dunno... "stupid?" that's a good non offensive word that everyone can agree upon.
secondly, while I agree with you based on what I've seen of iChat so far, it does look kinda lame, all I've seen so far is a tiny little screenshot on apple's website. I'll reserve judgement until I actually use the software, or atleast see some more screenshots. If it sucks, I'll just stick with proteus, which covers every chat client under the sun (AIM, Yahoo, MSN, Jabber, ICQ..) and runs circles around the "official" clients for AIM, Yahoo, and MSN.
check it out, yo...

i use it and like it a lot better than proteus, though I miss the menubar item.
what I am really excited about in jaguar is the level of integration they're going with in Addressbook, sounds like it's going to be very similar to a palm os or newton style system where you contact info will be easily accessible in any application that needs it. Sounds like newton's soups are joining rosetta (now ink or inkwell) on the new os.
I really think apple is making all the right moves right now. the new powerbooks gave us what we asked for, the eMac is going for blood in the education market, the iMac is just plain cool again, and everything coming in jaguar sounds exciting... lets just hope they pull it all off.
ciao,
michael

You know you need to get out of your narrow minded point of view when you stoop to the level of associating someone's sexuality with a bad UI. Being gay and in an American high school, I have to deal with hearing that crap day in and day out, but I wouldn't expect to hear it from those who -- and I'm going on a weak assumption that you're included here -- can express themselves in more than grunts and expletives. Maybe I should call the eMac Jewish and then say "oh wait, no offense to all you jews out there." Pretty offensive, dude. Grow up.

keep it out of the boards. pleeeeeeease
Anyway... back to discussion.
From what has been seen, it looks like it was made for technophobes.
I just hope there different views or that we will be able to hack the crap out of it.
This is my thinking of that feature:
You can have peer2peer conversations within AIM, and now we can discover people on our LANs, so this is great
It is like sending out server wide messages but now being able to get a response!
However, i do think Apple made this a little busy. Possibly, maybe you can turn down all the flashyness and bubbles.
Also, saying gay is totally unneccesary, you could just stupid, i agree
J
looking for the best os x instant messaging app for my kids to use at home....
The guy also says there is no restriction to the size of the files you transfer to eachother. Will there be resumable downloads? Can we say iWarez
imagine: AI Buddy list to transfer files to eashother of latest Jag builds and whatnot... would be nuts.
Again though, I really really hope we get MSN Messenger integration. There is no way I can get 120 people from my buddy list to subscribe for AIM!!!
how does proteus compare to adium?? thanks g

proteus rocks, with its menu bar item, but fire is better(in my opinion)Epicware sw
Hmmm. How popular are MSN and Yahoo Messenger? It seems to me that for us college kids AIM is absolutely the norm, I mean,"just AIM me" has become a part of our language! We don't say "just Yahoo Messenger me" or "MSN me!" at all! Just wondering what markets Yahoo and MSN have captured.

That's how I've always thought. No one I know (high school kids) uses MSN or Yahoo or any others. Everyone is on AIM/AOL though.
Does it support video chat?

No.
Either way, I'd much rather have SCANNER DRIVERS than an IM Client in what is essentially the third (public) version of this OS. I realise it isn't exactly Apples job to write drivers for Epson, Canon, Microtek et al, but it is their responsibility to make sure that said companies DO write them. I can't even count the number of people I know with scanners beside their machines that sit un used just because of a lack of drivers.

MSN seems to be popular in schools in New Zealand.
Think of the thousands of people with Hotmail accounts. Some people will use MSN just because they are already registered (hve a Hotmail account)
Now my Proteus contact lists are filled with about the same number of contacts in ICQ and AIM each - MSN and YahooIM are still empty.
I don't want proprietary things but as AOL gives away their client for free and the iChat application doesn't seem to have ads in it, I'll try it. I'll even go as far as forcing my ICQ buddies to switch to AIM *lol* Then I'll see how much influence I have
Oh and BTW, using the word gay in all sorts of situations to describe something negative is not suitable and should be avoided. People might easily get offended because there is nothing wrong with me or others.
