T-Mobile HotSpot @ Home

So T-Mobile released a service called Hotspot @ Home the same week as the iPhone. In short, for $10 a month you get a phone that can swap between WiFi and their network, a wireless router and (here is the kicker) unlimited WiFi access to anywhere T-Mobile has a hotspot (like Starbucks or Barnes & Noble). If you make calls on the Wifi you don't get charged your minutes, at home or in a wifi hotspot (or at a friends who has wifi, or work, or any coffee shop that works that way), etc.

Something like this seems like it would have been a no brainer for integration with the iPhone, and really would have helped pimp out its wifi capabilities.

Oh what could have been.. . .

So, why can't it happen again.

Think airport extreme + .mac + ATT it's not that hard to implement.

well because .mac is $99 outside the phone plan, not $10 additional dollars, and you don't get the major added value of tmobile hotspot integration at all starbucks or barnes and nobles

.mac is $99/year, the HotSpot service looks to be an additional $10/month. Apple wouldn't need to even charge the full $99 for just a dedicated iPhone/WiFi service through .mac

Well, if the speculation about AT&T sharing revenue with Apple for each plan sold is accurate, allowing clients a way to lower the amount of phone minutes they need, thereby choosing lower cost plans, would cut into AT&T's piece of the pie.

    Maybe some day.
