If Apple really wanted to be greedy, they could phase out the regular ipod altogether and FORCE people to buy the iphone.
it would also mean them totally getting into bed with phone networks which is only going to drag down their (currently extremely good) public image. i know it would with me: use of an ipod forces me into dealing with a bastard phone network -> resent apple
This is the only thing that makes any sense to me for a 6G iPod:
It may well have a home button but it doesn't have to be on the face. The bezel could be black instead of chrome. The back could be black anodized aluminum or silver like the iPhone.
Differentiation between the iPhone and the new iPod can be done cosmetically and with features and pricing. Sticking with the existing iPod and just adding a fancier interface is a non-starter. You can't say the iPhone is the best iPod we've ever made and then come out with a new version that's not so much.
If they want to release lower-end models with that interface, then fine. But if there isn't at least the option of a multi-touch, iPhone-esque model at the high end, they've lost my sale.

Mine too.
Hopefully this is just a final upgrade to the 5.5g that will coincide with release of the 6g. I say this because I don't think the simple addition of Coverflow + Splitscreen will cause people to rush out and buy a new model.

I saw that on Mac Rumors last night but it has been removed at the request of Apple legal. Looks like that was too real. Hope it's just an upgrade for existing iPods and not what the 6G iPod will be like.

I would never believe that except for the fact that it was removed. It might just be a firmware upgrade for the 5g ipods, since Apple would not make the mistake of releasing a non-touchscreeen ipod. I would not buy it if the changes were only with the interface.
Of course those could just be features for the new iPod, and it could still have a touchscreen.

Why? For only a song and video player what is the multi you need to touch? A click wheel would work just as well, even with the iphone's exact interface, as long as only the song and video parts of the iphone were the only ones offered. All they would need to do is give it a nano-sized click wheel and put it lower down and make the screen 3-3.5 inches and have it sense orientation, and maybe have the click wheel have OLED's behind it so when you turn it on it's side the menu and play button's etc, fade out and fade in in the proper position but in landscape.
Anyone good with photoshop wanna make that mockup for me?
I expect cover flow to be there, but what if the new iPod uses a Front Row 2.0 style interface? There will still be a Home button but it will not be on the front like the iPhone has because the front of the iPod will be all screen with a small bezel bordering it. I think the 6th generation iPod will be the first that doesn't have white but will only have black so it resembles a TV or it will be all aluminum like the new iMac so we can still have a matching iPod-iMac setup.
Personally, I like being able to 'feel' the iPod buttons because it's easy to change songs or volume when I'm relaxing or it's in my pocket. And my guess is that many people won't like not being able to do this on a touch screen.

Apple knows this too, so I think gestures will allow for basic functionality control. Tap the screen once to play / pause, double tap to skip to the next track etc. You would have no problem doing that in your pocket. In fact, it would be much easier than having to feel for buttons.

...and it would certainly get you some weird looks (not to mention interest from the police) as you are seen repeatedly 'tapping' in your pocket as you walk around town.

Well, besides purely aesthetic reasons ("It's so damn cool.") it allows for a larger screen and sleeker design. But yes, if they decide to go your route I'll be happy. Just not this damn ugly 'short' iPod that's being talked around. Something like the Toshiba Gigabeat (but, of course, moreso) would suit me fine.

I hope the next ipod has wifi capabilities.

Rumors are one thing, but deliberately trying yo fool people is another thing. The last thing we need is to get side-tracked by this fake b*****

Video of the interface for those interested. It doesn't show much but it shows more than the picture in the previous link.

Just cause they were removed does not make it true. If you look at it, it's obviously not true.
I wasn't saying I believed it. The fact that it was removed makes it a possibility.
Anything is a possibility, but this is fake.

EDIT: Well, some iPod will have that interface if you ask me. The video in the link above was removed because of an Apple copyright.
