What is the best E-MAIL software?

Alrighty!

After seeing the Jaguar at the Expo I feel like it is time to actually shift all my OS 9.2 software preferences to OS X. I am currently using MS Outlook Express 5 under classic. I would like to know if there is a better software for basic e-mail send/receive than O Express. How good is the "Mail" software that comes with OS X?

I don't want to start importing all my archive of e-mails until I decide which one to use. Please toss in your two cents... <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

The main program built into OSX i find is real good and stable as a rock like OSX it self. i can leave both on for over 5 months with out a reboot and every thing still runs strong

I used to be a big Outlook lover and also entourage is pretty good but Mail that comes with OSX is probably the best I have used, it just gets the job done and with the new Mail App coming out on OS 10.2 it will be even better. I recommend the OSX Mail App over any other mail program at least Mail stays true to the look and feel of OSX.

I used to be an Entourage/Outlook Express user. I had thought Mail.app wasn't sufficient for my needs. Then, a friend of mine "dared" me to just try Mail.app for a week.

Since that week about six months ago, I've used Mail.app 100%. I love it. It's stable, it's fast, it doesn't use the CPU when idle, it looks great, it has good rules for sorting mail, and now it has a spam filter.

Does anyone know if Outlook Express is going to be carbonized or not. I hate starting Classic whenever I wish to read mail and no matter how much I try to like iMail, I have to admit it is weaker that Outlook in many aspects.

I thought I saw an Outlook express for OSX on the mactopia site but I may be wrong the new version of Mail will have a lot more to it.

Mail is great. Straight forward, good design, and best of all, it can check your Unix based email!

Mail.app certainly has all the features I need but there are a few things that let it down.

It seems to be optimised for a fast/permanent connection to the internet and I get several problems with my 56k modem connection. The mac.com email tries to use IMAP where possible and put those emails into a different mac.com-specific inbox. Because I use other email addresses (my ISP one for large attachments and my wife's emails), I use rules to move the mac.com emails into my main Inbox. This appears slow (it takes a long time for Mail to move emails between Inboxes) and flakey as not all emails get caught by the rule and haven't worked out why.

The other problem is that the activity viewer gives very little feedback on what is happening, especially with mac.com mail. If there is an email with a very large attachment, the activity viewer will just say that it is checking for mail and you get a spinning pizza but nothing else happens until it has finished - there is no progress bar or percent complete feedback to assure you that it is actually doing something and has not crashed. Also because you cannot tell how long it is going to be, I cannot make the decision to stop the download and use webmail to read/delete the large email without downloading the large attachment.

If Apple fixes these problems, I will be very happy with it, but at the moment I do often have to swear at it when it has frozen for 10 minutes solid and I have no idea what it is doing.

I have used Outlook for years and it is great, but I am giving up any hope of a OS X version any time soon. I do like Mail for the most part except for two big things for me:

There is no option to check spelling before sending, only as you are typing. I like to do it very last thing and don't want to accidentally send without it.

Attachments are a big problem in Mail, I don't like the way they are put in with the mail text. Also I have had problems with others reading them. Even a plain text BBedit file was messed up with special characters. I sent the same file from Outlook and no problem.
