"Shake" for Mac release at Siggraph?

I got a flyer in the mail today for the LA DV expo. Listed inside is an Apple Training Day for July 31st with this text "Discover the in's and out's of Shake: the Apple Compositing Solution."

That's one week after the start of Siggraph in San Antonio which is the biggest 3D and compositing show of the year. It would only make sense that Apple would use this venue to make a big announcement about this kind of software... and then start showing it at other events around the country... like LA DV Expo. Wishful thinking???

Here's my wild prediction. Apple will show Shake running on OSX and will announce that they have purchased Maya. I still think the other shoe is gonna drop on a 3D company before it's all said and done.

Here's my wild prediction. Shake 2.5 will be announced in about 1 minute for Mac OS X.......

Sow how does that work. Does the Windows/Irix user get TWO copies of OSX Shake for $5 Gs?

They said those win/irix/linux users can get double licence (two OSX licence I think) for no charge...not too sure...

That really "eliminates" the problem of those PowerMac's outrageously high price.

Shake really require very high power machine(s) to run. Hope we will see some powerful macs coming shortly

This is amazing, they totally screwed the Windows,Linux,and IRIX users (IRIX???)...

This is the greatest thing..."Either use your current NON mac machines and pay 10,000 dolalrs...or use the money you were going to pay, get a Mac and get the Mac version...save some money!"

Two things.

1) The price for the Mac version (a new product) is set at half the other versions. The other versions have retained the same price point AFAIK (although the Windows version will be discontinued in time). I fail to see how anyone could critisise Apple for not subsidising their software on competing platforms.

2) $10,000 is not a lot of money for the people who actually are using this product.

Already discontinued. The company I work for had 30 licenses of Shake Win2k on yearly renewable licenses. The only os's I can renew on are Linux and Mac.

And the reason its half the cost on Mac is because you'll need twice as many machines to do the same amount of work.

i read somewhere that windows can upgrade to 2.5. you can't buy a new copy for windows but if you have copy you can.

uh,,, anyone else find it extremely amusing that Shake requires a 800Mhz G4 processor and for the PC side requires a 550Mhz Processor.

applenut I think you are on to something here. Is it just me or do programs need a faster Mac than PC? Netscape needs more RAM on a Mac, even Warcraft III has steeper requirements (double the VRAM needed!)

This can mean only two things: Macs are slower, or the programs for the Mac are slower (a result of less optimization because of smaller market share.) Either way it looks pretty bad. Especially bad when Stevie says less Mac mhz beats more PC mhz (and then the numbers are bass ackwards on the box of software.)

Apple MUST have something to run all this new software on, or people will switch the software they are using, not the platform. Apple needs to get the new PowerMac out quick. Yesterday would be preferable. MWSF is waaaaaaaaaay to late.

The only thing he is on to is that the Shake codebase is a virgin one on Mac OS X and heavily unoptimized, while it has had a few years of refinement on x86.

It's a brand new product, a brand new port. I'd expect the Apple version to lag behind a bit.

I hope Apple buys Maya. It's the greatest 3D out there. If apple is ready for Shake, it's ready for the Unlimited version of Maya. But, I don't think Alias/Wavefront can afford to develop it's high end version of Maya without some financial support. The Complete version of Maya is now 4.5, I spoke with their repts. at Macworld, and they're really keyyed up about Apple. It would be a great match, but stronger Macs have to be coming. I have the dual 1g fully loaded, and it's fast with no problems. I don't know what more I will gain, but I'll take it.

"Shake 2.5 is scheduled to be available in August for Mac OS X, Linux, IRIX and Windows.

To purchase Shake for Linux, IRIX and Windows*, contact the Apple sales team for Shake at sales@nothingreal.com.

*Shake 2.5 for Windows is available to existing Shake 2.46 Windows customers only."

Interesting note, Mac system requirements list a 3-button mouse.

Is it just me or does the Shake page look bare, empty and not so exciting? I imagine Apple will update once it is out, and once the new towers come out...
