Rendezvous

Will OS9 get Rendezvous? isn't it supposed to be this new cool network protocol that is open source and will work on any platform? and will allow osx out of the box to autodiscover many different platforms. if not from apple then i assume a 3rd party vendor will release one?

When are the printers with rendezvous built in supposed to start shipping?

When will the source be released for it?

are any other os's planning on including it in the near future?

does anyone else besides me see this as being one of the cooler technologies coming out for jaguar?

OS9 is dead for the programmers not for the customers, and i'm a customer, and i want rendezvous.

You said it yourself: "OS9 is dead for the programmers".

I doubt you'll see 'Rendezvous' on Mac OS 9.

OS 9 will never see another major feature release whether you want it or not. The simple answer is if you want Rendezvous switch to OS X then. That's what they are trying to encourage you to do anyway.

On a side note I'm looking forward to it as well. Windows apparently has looked at it or something. That's what SJ said in his keynote at least I believe. Someone else can look for me.

Death awaits all operating systems without modern technology. OS 9 has been on the chopping block since OS 7. When Copland was hit in a drive-by, The child of NeXt and Mac OS was born king. Long live X, death to 9!

    LONG LIVE 9.

Some of us think that X is just alot of fluff.

I run Solaris with Virtual PC using 9 that, in my opinion, is a better UNIX then X is.

LONG LIVE 9... until Apple cleans up X.

I bet you're expecting Quarts Extreme, mysql, php, apache, gcc3, cups, bluetooth and iSync on 9 too eh? <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

Funny how the move to X has given us so much in so little time. Think about it... We are getting some of the newest stuff on X before even hits the 'Windows Radar Screen' usually it was Unix/Windows and many years later MacOS MAYBE.

Let me guess... you're running a pre-G4 system and OS X runs like crap on it?

I've found that most people that despise Mac OS X are running it on a G3 (read: three year old hardware), or their machine can't run it at all

It's ok, I was the same way until I tossed my beige G3 out the window and bought a Dual 450 G4 Sure, it isn't a fast G4, but it runs OS X so well I never really complain about speed... on the G3, I couldn't go 10 minutes without hating the OS

What needs cleaning up in X! I think Jaguar brings X up to scratch?

Well I only know that doing the make of my project in Solaris under 9 takes 87 minutes.

Doing the make of the same code using OS X takes 106 minutes.

Because of all the overhead of Virtual PC running Solaris and it all under OS 9, I would think the times should be the other way round.

Of course the same make takes 12 minutes on my SUN ULTRA E4500 at work, but having OS X be at least as fast as with Solaris under OS 9 would be nice.

Then ditch the mac and run Solaris if it's so much faster. Making a program falls under the compiler, not the OS. Thing that maybe Sun's compiler is more efficient? Naw... that couldn't be. Solaris just must be an overall better OS. We should all be running Solaris, now shouldn't we? ... idiot ( sorry for the rant, I just kinda went off there ... I'm ok now though )

The original posterwasn't demanding Apple support Rendezvous in OS9. He/she also asked if it might be left up to third party devs. This is entirely possible. Just because Apple says stop developing for OS9 doesn't mean all development stops outside of Apple.

Rendezvous is built on open standards. Therefore it should be within reason that someone could develop a Rendezvous client/interface for OS9, if there is sufficient demand. IMHO there isn't the demand.

As for the comment "OS9 is dead for the programmers not for the customers, and i'm a customer, and i want rendezvous.", if you are still suing OS9 exclusively, chances are pretty good you are not a current customer of Apple's. When you purchased and installed OS9, no promises were made about Rendezvous support...mainly cuz it probably didn't exist then. Using this arguement, I could claim the same right as a customer and demand rendezvous support for my MacPlus (currently in use as a footstool under my desk), hell might as well demand full OSX 10.2 support for the poor thing while I am at it. Bite the bullet, and buy OSX when 10.2 is out, and get all the features you want.

<a href="http://www.zeroconf.org/"; target="_blank">Zeroconf</a> is Rendezvous or vice versa.

[quote]Apple has announced that Zeroconf, under the product name Rendezvous, forms the foundation for completing Apple's transition from AppleTalk to all-IP networking. Apple's customers have high expectations for ease of use, and Zeroconf enables Apple to meet those expectations. Apple is providing Zeroconf services beginning in the Jaguar release of the Mac OS X Operating Sytem, and will be using those services aggressively in its own applications.

    Rendezvous is awesome.

I think it was the most impressive thing at the keynote.

Software. Innovation. Bringing ease of use to the 'man'.

    This is Apple.
