Interesting. It's only 1:46am in the UK now... Steve hasn't spoken yet.

Stuff up...?... was a media release for 18 September supposed to wait till 11am?

    Or are they guessing?

There's nothing new in the article and they don't know the actual price.

I think that someone at the Independent has got his dates mixed up and let the proverbial out of the bag, i am sure that he will be getting a call from Apple in the morning. I am surprised that Apple would go to the trouble of keeping he evenings events under cloak and dagger but then ruin it by issuing press releases the day before!!

Everything fits though as expected though, the same Edge iPhone on o2 being sold by Carphone warehouse.

Earlier posters are indeed correct, o2 have been "rolling out" an edge network over the past few months i guess in anticipation of the iPhone. I used the quote marks because i have read that the change from GPRS to Edge is actually a software change and not a hardware change so a new network has not really been rolled out but re-configured for Edge. There have been a few reports of people in the cities getting edge icons on their phones.

So i would guess no 3G iPhone yet.

Yeah, it's starting to feel that way. We may have to wait 'til the Asian launch for it. Bummer. \

Apple will still have a good Euro launch though. I just think their sales after that will not be what they could be w/out 3G.

A lot of Euros will wait for 3G to show up before they buy. And Nokia, Motorola, LG, etc aren't just gonna sit around and twiddle their thumbs. Apple waits too long, and the stampede of iPhone clones start to show up... with 3G.

    Hey Everyone,

Here is what I've discovered from other websites and searching the web for other info. First, an Apple store employee has stated that they received around 50 boxes about 1 metre by 1 metre on the 13th September in one of the Apple stores but he doesn't know what's in them and they have been kept under CCTV 24/7 and they have been told not to open the boxes until further notice. Second, I've just been onto the uk o2 website, clicked on Online Shop under phones and guess what? ...Here is the message that I got. "Thanks for visiting the O2 Online Shop We're sorry you're unable to access the Online Shop at the moment. We are currently making improvements to the site to provide customers with an even better shopping experience." And finally, if you add the numbers of all the buses that stop outside the Apple Store or on Oxford Circus, they add up to 1002, therefore at 10 their will be announcement about o2. Ok so the last theory is a bit lame but I'm sure it's an iPhone. Yipee!! !

More live coverage: Apparently no 3G... EDGE and GPRS, aka slow and slower. Boo. \

    Unlimited data with £35, 45, 55 plans.

In the Q&A session, the reporters immediately hit Steve with the "Why no 3G?" question.

Steve responds that 3G cuts the talk time by a factor of about three (seems like an exaggeration from what I've seen of 3G phones), and that there's thousands of WiFi hotspots in the UK.

He adds that he thinks 3G chipsets will be energy-efficient enough sometime "late next year".

    Can you say "Asian launch"?

    Ok guys,

It's being released on the 9th of November 2007 for £269. That's a fair bit more expensive than in the states, but still less expensive than many other desirable phones in the UK.

No sign of 3G, especially since they have just upgraded the GPRS to EDGE.

It's a shame it's not available immediately - I rather fancied popping out to get one this afternoon!!!

iTunes WiFi music store is coming to the UK soon.

Apple and O2 cut a deal with a company called Cloud to provide free WiFi to Euro iPhone users. Good, 'cuz I hear that free WiFi wasn't exactly common over there before.

The Euros will be using the iTunes Store to activate their iPhones, just like us Yanks.

    18 month contracts.

Apparently the data plan is not quite 'unlimited'. Apparently 1,400 or more Internet pages viewed in a day breaks the 'fair use agreement'. Hmm.

Steve and the O2 say they have to stay "one step ahead" of the guys who are unlocking the iPhone for use with any carrier. Good luck with that.

Steve calls the iPod Touch "training wheels for the iPhone". Hmm, possibly a revealing comment right there.

The O2 CEO says that they'll be "north of 30%" of their network having EDGE by iDay. Does that mean the rest is GPRS (even slower), or some combo of GPRS and UMTS(3G)... which doesn't really matter 'cuz the iPhone can't use it (the 3G) anyway?

The O2 CEO dodges a question regarding how many they expect to sell.

Steve refuses to discuss who the carrier partners in other Euro countries are going to be. This is an O2-UK announcement only.

Steve gets a question about if the 'low spec'd by Euro standards' 2 megapixel camera is a concern. Steve says its fine, no surprise there.

O2 CEO says that unlimited data plans will be rolling out for all O2 customers, not just iPhone buyers, as of October 1. Steve adds, "It's the future."

    And that's a wrap.
