One suggestion to consider. I have a MBP as well and I find that by placing the dock on the left side, I find that there is more working desktop. I tried hiding the dock but didn't like it.
How do you get your Dock sitting at the bottom like that?
When I hold [SHIFT] and click on the divider to move it to the side of the screen it always centers itself. it would be really cool to keep the trash basket in one corner

It's built-in functionality in Tiger. Just create aliases for the folders you want and drag them to the Desktop. Then right click each one and select a color-label. To place labels on the side, right-click the Desktop > Show View Options > Label Position: Right. I'm using the Agua icon set if that's what you're asking.

Easy, I know where they are.
I have a 20" display so the icons are easy to see.
