Microsoft Movie Maker 2 vs. iMovie 2
Well as usual Apple innovates and MS imitates.
I have to start to wonder if this is going to hurt Apple's sales. Plenty of people justify Apple's insane prices because they have to develop the iApps which they give away and add value to the platform. Well now of course Microsoft is giving away a much better version of Movie Maker. (the first version was absolutely laughable it was so terrible)
However Apple (as usual) has led the way and now are standing absolutely still. iMovie hasn't been revised in oh so long. It was the first iApp and is at version 2 and iTunes came afterward and is at version 3. Microsoft is of course doing side by sides that show dramatically more more effects, transitions and titles. If you look at some of the sample movies they have so pretty cool effects and titles. (Of course the fonts and typesetting of them look terrible in my book)
What do you think? Is Apple going to respond soon and dramatically?

One of the things that strikes me about iMovie, is that if you have pro quality stock footage, you could actually do a fairly good approximation of pro quality video-editing. Just the sound facilities and color correction need some sprucing up. You know, someone could concievably come along with some plug-ins/hacks for iMovie and iDVD (perhaps with the help of QT tech) to take them into near professional level apps...
Consumer will LOVE it!

<strong>Is Movie Maker 2 using the web browser (Explorer) paradigm a la the old version? Yes... It's horrid.

You're right it is horrid. Just to see what this might do to Apple, I downloaded it to try out. (Especially since iMovie is my favorite iApp)
It was...not terrible. It certainly wasn't as free flowing and enjoyable as iMovie, but it could certainly be enough to make a switcher not switch.
The timeline does have the ability to change to something that more closely approximates iMovie. The adding of transitions and titles isn't quite as nice, but again it is solid and there.
For me the best approximation is Microsoft Word. I hate Word. I think it is a big piece of shite. However most people don't seem to find it as criminally kludgy and in your face as I do. They find all the ways to turn off the annoying wizards and interface extra's and get (I guess for them) a powerful word processor.
I myself still use Appleworks. When I type things stay where I put them and it is still great for the small spreadsheets, mail-merges, brochures and posters I do. It is also cheap.
That is all for now,
Nick
I've never really given AppleWorks a chance, even when I used macs more often, I used '98 or '01.
If you use really long documents, M$ is good. However, I've virtually grown-up in word, so I'm sure i seriously underestimate the extent of my Word based habits. I do find it odd, now going back to Windows 3.1, that I found the oldest versions of word the most comforting (v.2 and v.6). Something is not progressing properly in the world of Office.
