I don't want to be mean here, so I started another thread... Which really just makes you want to kiss Apple cause 2003 is going to be a screamer...

    Interesting...

You know how when person X signs on to AIM or Yahoo Mess. or whatever, the clients can poll to see if their friends are online?

    Same functionality, but in reverse.

When the recipient is online, Shout puts up a message - "Hey, do this." or "We're here," "or whatever the sender wants.

The key is that it has to be some kind of system-level entity, waiting for a ShoutOut from an acceptable sender. It always exists at the system level, only the relevant recipents/sender combinations change with log-ins, a user-pref.

This is an Apple Event kind-of thing (the API, I mean).

The remote computer sends an encrypted, user-sender specific Apple Event to the Rendezvous'd machines on the network, the Window Manager draws a window on top of all the others, and presents the message.

It could use iChat as the vehicle, or a simple window.

It needs to be encrypted and password protected because Apple Events can control ANY function of the computer.

Oooh, this could really be a bad-hacker hole as an Apple Event. Hey -- How about integrating into iCAL - it already has reminders built in that will launch whether the app is running or not....

Both of those examples which you mention include people who would already be recieving information either through an e-mail listserv, or through a shared scheduling/Calendar program...

The only cool thing here is Rendevous... So without me saying much, check out my new thread, I don't want to start trolling over here...

I have scenarios where that may not be true:

    1. Public computers or people who do not have e-mail they cannot get to

    2. where are those programs that are free and offer these capabilities?

not to be mean, you know? But, this program is useful, and I would like more people to join on...come on!

No, it's all sounding cool to me, and this should be very helpful for Mac, Linux, and Windows alike.

Here, I'll help you out with a potential use of your software:

It's 2003, Unreal Tournament just came out, and you're throwing a 20+ player Lan Party to last all night, but instead of yelling accrossed all the madness, you can use Shout to tell people the beer break is over, and that it is now time to resume massive fragging...

    that sounds sweet to me...

(But I still think you could use ZeroConf, which is all about LANs, and thus be integrating a client and a server into both pieces... After all, then the (what you're calling the server) would still need to ask all the clients (which are really behaving server like at this moment) about themselves. Thus if you build off a Two way model, couldn't you then add support to limit the real communication to only 1 way? Zero Conf is about "no servers," which kind of makes everything a server... For the specific functionality, you could just limit the ability of this "client"

nebagakid: I would begin to sketch it all up. what features it should have, how the networking should go, etc. like a rulebook.

    shoutx.sourceforge.net

    or

    donkeybutt.com

    BUT: Back on topic:

Everyone here, please find and redirect a developer towards:

    <a href="http://shoutx.sourceforge.net"; target="_blank">http://shoutx.sourceforge.net</a>;

the only way this can become a reality, and stay free, and become the program we all want, is that more developers join! <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" /> <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

i think that you have to have a sourceforge.net account to register... if you are a developer, and want to be on the developers list, e-mail me... uhm... look in the upper left corner of the page to register for sourceforge.net <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" /> <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" /> <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />
