I want a tablet and I too own an iPhone. Say what you will but you cannot call the iPhone or the iPod touch a Mac and expect anyone not to respond to such nonsense. "Desktop class applications" my ass. This tablet we're (well I am) talking about has a much larger screen and faster processor. How about an 11" multi-touch screen (possibly 10), a real desktop, a dock and one of those 1.6 Core2Duo "Air" processors. A truly revolutionary ultra-portable computer, an amazing couch computer, an amazing portable movie player - and for the first time ever - a fully touchable version of "Mac" OS X. In a way that would be even more revolutionary than the iPhone.

Yesterday's conference call made one thing clear:

Apple considers the iPod touch and iPhone the first of a brand new series of devices: wifi enabled, always connected, personal Internet devices. Not merely 'the best iPod ever'.

And in that light releasing a full featured SDK suddenly makes sense.

From this it is also clear that these devices are not Macs - regardless whether they run a subset of OS X.

They are a new platform. Something with which Apple hopes to reshuffle the cards again, creating a new 'personal computing' platform.

Now the rumored 'tablet', will have to be either a Mac or the third of these new devices. It can't be both.

Seeing that rumors suggest a small size and no keyboard, and assuming that this new platform would have to be a major Apple focus to succeed, I'd bet that the new 'tablet' will be the third of these new devices, a bigger iPod touch with likely more memory and twice the screen resolution.

Now the question is would anyone want an iPod touch x 2? And why?

If Apple is truly trying to establish a new platform of wifi devices, one model with a bigger screen would make a lot of sense. Especially for people who find text on the iPhone too small or buttons too tiny. As impressive as photos are on an iPod touch, a screen with twice the resolution would certainly improve the look of them.

Now imagine what it could do for rented movies?

I expect the new device to be a combination of 'Mobile Apple TV' and 'iPod touch' with bigger text for easier reading of web pages and emails and bigger, easier to type virtual keyboards.

And trow in a few downloadable (online) games for good measure.

I do not expect this 'tablet' to be a Mac; it will not run Photoshop or any other professional drawing or video editing application. It will not be a 'tablet computer' in the traditional sense.

A full-size tablet makes no sense after Apple has just released the Air. Let's distinguish Ireland's wishes from the actual rumors.

The rumor is that Apple is working on another multi-touch device, and that it will be 1.5 times the size of the current iPhone/iTouch. An UMPC. They say it is coming in the first half of 2008. That comes from Appleinsider, which obviously has sources, because they have generally been very accurate in recent years. In contrast, what is the source for a larger tablet? Anyone can put whatever they want on the internet, but we should use the source's track record to evaluate the claims.

So when then will we see it? The rumors of the Macbook air turned out to be true. So why not the mactouch? The latest rumors had the thing with dual 9" screens with both screens being multitouch. And the bottom screen turns into an onscreen keyboard when activated as such.

So can someone investigate the story here and find out when most likely they will debut the thing? Perhaps In february they will when they announce the iphone/ipod touch SDK??

So what is the MacTouch? I don't remember apple ever saying there was any product called the MacTouch. It's absolutely stupid to pin your hopes on a rumor.

And most likely it won't be called the mactouch. That name is just a placeholder till the actual device debuts. Oh, and it does exist and it is definately beyond the prototype stage. Apple is getting ready to show it off soon I can feel it.

The mactouch will likely be called something else just the same way we used to call the macbook air the "macbook nano" til it debuted.

The only reason why I'm leaning on the dual screen solution because the latest round of rumors concerning it were pretty strong. They were along the lines of how the last set of macbook air rumors were so strong they turned out to be mostly correct.

The only question in my mind now is when will they debut it? I say this year but when this year? In june?

Well, I typed up a long, detailed, and convincing response to your post but AppleInsider logged me out as it was sending, completely losing what I had written so I'm bowing out of this discussion.

Our problem, it seems, is that there are various things going on at once.

When Olternaut started this thread, I suspect it WAS from the rumors that came from the original one posted here. From there, we have Ireland posting...well, I am not certain what. It seems just random speculation but his language implies that he wants to pass it off as insider info.

Personally, I am only expressing my desires from such a device. I don't think I have ever tried to pass it off as anything else.

That sucks man! I would have loved to read it and given my counterpoints (or perhaps conceed if your logic rings true). This is why, if I am composing a longer post, I will cut and paste it back into input field just in case.

That's the problem. Some people wish so hard for things that it becomes rumor by repetition then from there it just evolves further until some will claim it's an established fact that the device in question is not only coming, but start using words like definite.

I'm really interested in seeing what sorts of apps will start popping up for the iPhone and iPod Touch. It's possible that some real gems may appear and actually drive a need for a larger tablet type device. Once there's an established need beyond "I need this just for nergasms' sake" the device will probably follow.

Well then it looks like I am getting an HP TX2000. I wont be putting Photoshop on it but I have a program for Windows that I can use to draw in, then save as a .psd. I suppose I can get Office for my writting....hmmmm.

OR I can save up and get a ModBook I suppose.

Now if only we can wish so hard it will come true....WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISH!!!! Nope, damn!

I suspect you are probably right. I think this new "Newton" as AI refered to the 1.5 times larger device, will test the waters, so to speak.

But then Apple could always pull something out of thin air and blow our minds!

I know there are a bunch of people who would like a tablet of sorts. I just thihnk there should be a solid groups of app first that would really benefit from that form factor. Apps that push beyond the Touch's ability to do proper justice, and aren't just "general purpose" apps with tablety functionality added. Something that would feel natural and achieve something more efficiently on a tablet, than on any other sort of machine/device.

Where I work, management gets tablet PC's to use and they are used as plain ol' laptops 100% of the time.

I know...it kills me that I either have to pay an arm and a leg to get a ModBook (which I suppose is really what I need...wish it had multitouch too though...) or ...get a Windows PC....

Aren't you the same guy that was convinced that there was going to be a streaming video from MacWorld?

Why wait for something to pop up, when if you think about it Apples own apps could use the larger screen right now. For example: Web Browsing, Video Play Back, Mail, Picture viewing could all use a larger screen. In many cases it doesn't take a huge increase in screen size to make those apps much more useful either. That is why I'm pretty much convinced that a larger but still pocketable device is justified.

While I would agree that new apps can drive the demand for a larger screen, I seethe demand as already there. What will be interesting when the SDK is released is to see if there is any info there indicating support for hardware with screen sizes other than the current Touch devices.

I think it will be a Mac, but it will have the iPhone's and iPod touch's user interface dynamic.
