4) Not mentioned earlier but add a dvd drive or better a Blu-ray drive to Apple TV so you can really get some use out of the thing. Now it is just a joke like the mac mini.
All that ATV update does is enable one to keep adding $$s to the iTunes store. Who needs or want that besides all you stockholders on here. Some of us want functionality from the Apple TV not just an empty juke box to fill up Apple with even more $$s.
I purchased an iphone handset from an o2 store, (could have purchased directly from the local AppleStore) took it home wrapped it as a birthday gift and then my wife opened it and activated it via iTunes. I don't understand your comments regarding not being able to purchase a boxed product and give as a gift. Is mainland Europe different to the UK in regards to purchasing an iphone.
yes, UK and US have apple stores selling it too, mainland EU only via the GSM provider
IIRC, one of the reasons Apple did not start with 3G is battery life. 3G sucks batteries more than EDGE and WiFi. So they traded off speed for length of use.
Yeah, but that was then, this is now... the 3G chipsets are getting better and more power-efficient. Check out the Blackjack II, released by Samsung two months ago... its a 3G smartphone with 7 hours talk time.

Also, people have been saying the same thing about the iPods for forever. "Where's the FM tuner?" "No voice recording?" "How about a built in laser pointer?"
Blu-ray is a much bigger deal than a laser pointer, though. Actually, its one of the few things that could get me interested enough to buy the AppleTV. And now that its become obvious that Blu-ray is going to win the format war, its a safer bet.

When Steve came back, one of the things he did was DRASTICALLY cut the number of products Apple makes. Apple has maintained a very limited product line up, and I think it has been a good strategy. There's no need for new MacBooks or MBPs, they just need to keep getting speed bumps till Apple decides to do a case redesign. (Although a mini-tower would be a welcome addition.)
That was a good strat back then (what was called 'Stevie's Magic Square') as Apple had become SUPER-bloated with far too many product lines. Of course now the number of products seems to be creeping back up... for example, we now have three different notebooks (MB, MBA, MBP) instead of two. And of course, there are what, four lines of iPods now?
The number of products can creep back up a little, so long as they don't go overboard with it.

The ATV chances of using optical media are the same as your cable box, Tivo, or Sling Box will ever use optical media

You can use the ATV without ever buying anything from iTunes the same way you can with the iPod.
I thought this was Apple's best quarter ever? What are the investors complaining about?
Earlier yesterday everyone was raving about how much money they made...
They're worried about beyond.
1. Poor Macworld. Niche products with high expectations.
2. iMac boom. Most signs point to current PowerPC iMac users replacing their old machines en masse. Expect sales to drop significantly.
3. No updates for iPod/iPhone
4. No new applications or technologies.
5. Macbook and 17" Macbook Pro still using older display technology.
6. Perceived intrusion of Dell's XPS line into Apple's territory.
7. Stagnacy in Mac line. Besides the Macbook Air, there really hasn't been a major redesign or introduction since the Mac Mini three years ago. Since then three models (eMac, large screen iBook, small screen, small screen Macbook Pro) have been discontinued without replacement.
2. iMac boom. Most signs point to current PowerPC iMac users replacing their old machines en masse. Expect sales to drop significantly.
That's a bizarre thing to say. It was some time last year that they said that half the people buying Macs were new to Apple. Apple's selling more than twice as many machines per quarter than they did when they were selling PPC Macs.
You can use the ATV without ever buying anything from iTunes the same way you can with the iPod.
But you can't add your existing video library to the AppleTV and with the current compression technology files are still way too big to practically do that anyway. Nobody is going to pay $225 to play their iTunes songs on their TV. When it comes down to it, the iPod and iPhone work because they have good practical designs that add new exciting things to the table. The AppleTV doesn't.

And they were all buying notebooks. The chances of the all in one form factor instantly catching after years of being ignored are remote. Existing Mac users replacing PowerPC machines at the end of their life cycles is more likely.

The videos can be streamed from your computer. As far as I know, there's no need to store them on the AppleTV.

I still don't understand how what you say fits the sales information. Apple's Mac sales have been growing pretty consistently, quarter to quarter and year over year. It is such that every quarter was maybe about double that of the same quarter three years before. I just don't see that as being rationally explained as just PPC users replacing their computers.

You do understand that the movies are about a gig and a half right? Doesn't take a whole lot of movies to fill up a desktop hard drive. Except for the real hardcore Mac users most of the people that Apple wants to sell AppleTV have their movies stored in DVD cases and very little has been done to change that. It Might change in a generation when compression gets better, but right now DVDs are cheaper and better. The only thing AppleTV really has going for it is High Definition rentals.

A gig to a gig and a half, depends on the length of the movie.

You can roughly store 350 - 500 hours of SD video or 100 - 125 hours of 720HD video on a $130 500GB HardDrive.

Apple is not the only company in data only media. DVR, VOD, and PPV are faster growing markets than DVD. DVD is actually becoming stagnant at this point.
People will abandon DVD with no problem if from their couch they have instant access to the same amount of content that is now on DVD. CD is much older than DVD and it is being left behind.

Compression isn't an issue, today's compression technology is excellent. Everything you watch is compressed. The only reason Blu-ray has a chance of success is because their isn't yet enough bandwidth to stream it.
DVD's are becoming cheaper because their sales are slowing.

All it takes is one or two stoopid analysts to criticize a certain stock based on what they think, and that stcok tumbles. Happens all the time. That's why the value of what these analysts say has the same value as the stuff I flush down the toilet everyday at 6 in the am.
