iPhone contacts

My iPhone contacts list is going haywire. Many entries now have multiple duplicates.

Is there any way of deleting Contacts en bloc?

There seems to be a bug in Address Book, where it creates "false" duplicates of entry information. I've found that if you select the edit button, they disappear. If you manually delete the duplicate entries, I've found out, it deletes the original as well. This, btw, was the first I used Time Machine to restore the Address Book from it's initial back up.
