the iphone for internet use

I am kind of new to this Iphone stuff and have held out to buy one. Now ATT has raised thier service $10.00. (30.00 extra a month for existing customers) What a bummer.
1) do you think this will lower demand for the new phone?
2) Can the iphone be used like a modem for your laptop and if so, how are the speeds with the 3g compared to DSL?
My thoughts are: Can I cancel my internet and just use my iphone as a modem for my laptop? If so, then I could save money that way to pay for the extra iphone service.
What are your thoughts on this?
Any help would be appreciated.

i'm sorry for being terse but they want their money and they have to pay for the subsidy somehow
its just many of those things we all want but can't have. it's a great phone and internet device, and will get better with the apps store
