This is a sort of stupid question, but I thought maybe some of you could offer some clarification for me.
For what reasons or situations would someone need a macbook pro over a regular macbook?
The Macbook Pro has a dedicated Video card and VRAM which can be a godsend if you do a lot of photo and video work. Otherwise, for just surfing the web, emails, etc., the Macbook would be a good choice.

The MBP also has an express card slot, and FW 800 for openers. The only one that can determine if the MBP is more valuable to the user than a MB is the user. Certainly, the extra cost of the MBP is supported by it's more and better features, but, one can get by with a MB. HTH
I'm not under the gun to purchase one. (I could even wait until after school starts really). But what do you think...buy now or wait and see what the new updates will be....whenever that is....
I was in the market for a new laptop when my computer spent almost a week in repair.
At first, I thought the MBP was the only way until I did some research.
The Macbook (black) is the highest end MB you can buy.
Both the MB and the MBP have the same exact amount of memory, the same exact HDD, the same exact processor and clock speed.
The big difference is size, cost and amount of power required to run and charge (definitely a savings with the MB).
A google search revealed that the MB processor speed is on par with the MBP and in certain apps, there is no performance difference between the two (including FInal Cut, where certain processes are processor dependent).
Dollar for dollar, you won't find a better bargain than the MB.
BTW, the white MB (when you upgrade to the larger 250 GB HDD) is cheaper than the same exact MB that comes in black (but the black comes with the larger HDD standard and because of that, you don't have to special order it which qualifies it as refundable (if that matters to you) and if it is not a special order, it ships faster (I got mine delivered the next day when I ordered it online)).
If you care about saving our planet by buying a computer that consumes less power, then the MB is the clear choice.

Just my opinion here, but _always_ wait if you can when buying something like a computer or car (anything with a depreciating value). If you want to spend X amount of money, it will probably get you more computer later than sooner. Plus, if you can squeeze an extra 6-12 months out of each computer (or 3-4 years out of each car), you'll really be saving a lot of money over time!
I'm still using my 12" iBook G4 (refurbished). For what I do, it works well enough for me to hold out a little bit longer, knowing that a new computer won't gain me any additional functionality that I can't live without (i.e. for checking email, updating iPod, and watching TV reruns this system still works just fine).
It's all about personal preference though. Speculation is that Apple will be spinning new designs of the MB/MBPro/(MBAir?) in the coming months. Me - I'm hoping I can pick up a new keyboard and battery on the cheap, and hold out until Snow Leopard ships before upgrading.

Who the hell told you that? A simple trek trough the online Apple Store to look at the specs will show you just how wrong you are. The performance of the MB and MBP are NOT the same.

I stand by my statement at the time I did my research a few weeks ago.
Both have 2 GB memory standard.
Both have 2.4 GHz clock speed standard, but two of the three have 2.5 GHz, so to justify an extra grand for 0.1 GHz is more power = not better for our planet.
Both have 250 GB HDD standard.
Other features/options beyond that are the extras you pay for.
Dollar for dollar, feature for feature, I stand by my word that the MB = the biggest return for your hard earned money.
Like I originally stated, I was originally in the market for a MBP, but when I did the proper research, the MB was the biggest value above all compared.

The MBP's have larger displays, and they have LED back lighting, Firewire 800, a card bus slot, a MUCH better video card w/more video ram, dual link DVI port, and an aluminum case instead of plastic. And you think that there's no difference.

Again, I am aware of the larger display, the aluminum casing (oooh, sure looks nice), video RAM (if you are using it with graphic intensive apps that actually require it).
If I was buying my first Mac, and I required it to be a laptop, then the 17" MBP would be it, but since my primary Mac is an iMac, my secondary Mac is a MB.
I just read the article on here about Apple possibly eyeing a lower starting price. I wonder if the new updates to the MB/MBP will be when this happens....if it happens...if the update ever happens...
This seem to be getting awfully quiet with Apple since the iPhone release...Does that mean no news is a sign of good news coming out sooner rather than later?

It does. Right up until you need slight better graphics.
Then the MBP delivers and the MB not so much. There IS a reason Apple structured it this way.
