Did they open up the iPhone for you there? If so, was it optional or required that they activated in store? I ask because my experience in the Apple Store was completely opposite than what I was told would happen. They did not open the box or force an actvation.

Yes,they opened up the box in front of me and activated the iPhone. Wasn't asked, they just activated it in front of me.
