This happened to me this weekend. For me it was about a half inch strip near the middle of the screen. Took it into the Apple store in SF today, and described to a sales rep what was happening. They took me up the Genius Bar and put me at the front of the line. After trying a few things (restart, restore) the guy said it would need to be replaced and gave me a brand new replacement on the spot. I was literally in and out with a new phone in less than 30 minutes.
When I got home, I connected the new iPhone and was prompted by iTunes to restore from my last backup. A minute later I was back in business.
I understand that buying first gen technology like this is a risk, as there are bound to be glitches. The mark of good technology company isn't in shipping 100% bug free products, but in dealing with the service side of things in a way that leaves the customer satisfied. Apple gets an A+ from me on this score.
Picked up my iPhone yesterday after calling the support number on the paperwork and was told the *repaired* iPhone had been delivered to the store. Turns out they replaced it with a new one (serial number beginning with 7T7 ... previous was 7R7). It was easy to re-activate and restore with iTunes, etc. so all is good.
My only gripe is with the $29 fee Apple charged for the loaner. Apple it seems is replacing all the iPhones that have this issue so it doesn't seem right for them to charge a loaner fee and make you go through the whole repair/loaner fee/replace charade ... Their policy also seems inconsistent judging from other posts on the forums.
After 4 months of usage i got the same problem, dead strip in the bottom of the screen. However, my iPhone is unlocked. its a 1.0.2 version jailbroken and unlocked. before i go to Apple store, i will restore it to the original sittings, unfortunately i can not "virginize" becuase i can not use installer because the dead strip at the buttom, and also i will not be able to activate as well.
The question is will apple replace/repair mine under warranty?

My guess is no because your phone has been hacked, but you need to try anyway.
The very same thing happened to me last night. The lower part of the display just stopped responding to input. Unfortunately my iphone is hacked aswell, which I fear will mean problems. Has anybody tried to go into an Apple store with a hacked phone, complaining about screen issues? Will they know that the phone has been hacked if I restore it?

I suggest privately messaging Erica Sadun at TUAW (.com?). She's pretty impressive with respect to keeping track of what can be done with a hacked iPhone.
I just wonder, do you think it is possible to fix the problem by changing the touch sensitivity, like this guy suggests, and is it possible to do so from your computer? The thing is I can´t get passed the "slide to unlock".
I had exactly the same issue - a portion of the screen on my 3G was unresponsive (the lower row of icons on the home screen) but seemed OK in SMS and Safari.
I tried backing up and restoring, restarting etc. to no avail and was all set to book a date with the Genius bar... but guess what? I went to the movies last night and switched off my phone for at least 2 hours. When I switched it back on everything worked perfectly!

My iPhone just got the WELL DOCUMENTED dead strip on the bottom of the screen. I bought the phone when the originals came out for a bargain $599. I just took it into the apple store in palo alto, and the asst. manager basically gave me the middle finger, said my warranty was up, & told me that I'd have to pay $199 to fix it. WTF?!! I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER APPLE PRODUCT AGAIN! Treating early-adopter customers like this is complete bullshit. Hopefully, I'll run into Steve Jobs again walking around town, and this time I WILL talk to him...

My iPhone just did the samething, the unresponsive strip at the bottom. I called the 1800myiphone and talked to the representative. She said since my iPhone was 132 days out of warranty, the only thing they can do it replace the phone for 199.99. I asked her if there was anything that she could do, a coupon or anything to help me out. (Can't even afford the 199.99 charge.)
I told her that my warranty (obviously) had expired last October but, my issues were happening well before that. The phone would lock up and I'd have to hard reset it over and over. Sometimes 6 to 8 times a day. I stated that I thought maybe the updates would help out. Since they didn't, I just thought it was the norm. I explained that three days ago, the bottom half the screen stopped working. I tried restoring as a new phone and everything.
She said that she would call the local Apple store and see if there was anything they could do to help out since the contract (199.99 replacement price) was through AT&T. After about 5 minutes on hold, she told me that she is about to talk to her supervisor and for me to hold on.
About 5 minutes later, she had a gentleman on the phone and she released me to him. (I thanked her kindly.) He asked me if I was aware that the phone was out of warranty, I told him was aware. He said out of good faith, he was going to setup a case to get me a new phone since the issues started before the warranty was out dated. I about flipped out. He asked me to hold so he could call the Apple store and make sure they'd swap it out.
He put me on hold and about three minutes later, he told me he was going to call the store and see if they will trade it out. About 3 minutes later, he said that they will trade it out. He said that the manager said he'd done it without my calling support. Just to make sure, he gave me a case # and told me that he will attache his name to the case and if they give me ANY grief, to refer them to that case #.
So, with the case # and the appointment for 5:15 TONIGHT, I'm going to HOPEFULLY go pickup the new phone. (I think it will be another first gen but, I hope it'll be a 3G.) Either way, I am really happy with Apple's support and how they helped me out.
I'll post tonight how it goes when I get back to the house.
BTW, first post.. hi, I'm Michael from Jackson MS. I'm an iPhone addict too.
Hello all! I dunno what anyone else has heard or seen, but i believe there is a fix out there, and I'm curious if anyone in here has heard anything recently... essentially, there's a setting that overdrives the sensitivity of the touchscreen on the iPhone 2G and then resets the chip that processes everything... I've seen comments out there that it works to fix dead strips, upper and or lower half dead screens, and more... if anyone does find anything out, I'd be willing to compensate, as I have probably 8 2G screens with dead or partially dead touchscreens!!!!

Does anybody know if the problem with dead stripes would get fixed if you bought and changed the display of the iphone?
