Jim Jannard the man behind Oakley and now Red Digital are going to announce a new roadmap for their Scarlet and Epic camera that is so significant he claims that the word "scam" will be used. Here's a comment on Reduser.net

Shawn... we have set our sights high and have learned a lot in the past month or so. We aim to make you proud of your belief in RED. This is the biggest, most exciting and incredible thing I have ever been involved in. Really great stuff. I am confident that you will be pleased. :-)

"I am certain that everyone here will have some skepticism about the specs we release.

Please know that we can hit our targets."

Nice! For those that don't know Scarlet is supposedly a 3k video cam for about $3k dollars. Epic is going to be the big brother to Red One and should be flat out amazing.

Nov 13th can't get here soon enough.

    Scam!

Here's to hoping they have some kind of 3D configuration.

Given that the Red One is $17,500, it's no wonder people would think it's a scam. No doubt the higher models are worth it for people who need it but the lowest one is great value for most.

There is supposedly info released of a 2 second startup time.

What are the capture options on one of these? I only saw a mention of CompactFlash and some Red Ray drive, which looks external. Surely given the price, they would be better off sticking a $500 128GB SSD drive in there vs 2 x 16GB CF cards.

Maybe this is part of the design change they have thought about given that SSD has dropped in price considerably.

A 3k camera with 128GB solid state storage, no capture times for around $3k total would be amazing.

Are you saying that Red is a scam? They have already released cameras that are pretty amazing and very cheap for their capabilities. When the Red One was announced people in the industry kept saying it wasn't possible and that it was just a ploy to get attention. The Red One did come out and it's pretty much exactly what they promised. This guy isn't some fly-by-night shyster.

I'm not saying RED is a scam. It was a joke response to the first post.

Jim Jannard is driving the entire digital cinematography industry to new price/performace levels. I applaud his efforts.

The RED products are very exciting. Specially the entry level Scarlet

They are revisiting the entire concept of Scarlet, so hopefully that does not mean a huge price hike for the product. $3k is a great start price point.

I can't wait to order one.

Yes...please maintain the pricepoint and add more flexibility. Jannard's comments about this announcement exceeding Red One is pretty amazing as RO has pretty much lived up to it's hype. It's nice to see innovation still happening stateside.

Who here actually bought a RED product? In my mind, they are doing some of the most exciting work in video cameras I've seen in a very long time.

Scarlet is going to bring a lot of new users into the fold. I could not afford a 17k base camera but a 3k camera is certainly within reach.

Scarlet will really be Red's first major test of production and quality as it'll be a volume product. My guess is it'll be the device that funds the next step of taking prototypes from lab to market. I believe that Red may get into 4k screens and even projectors someday soon.

Sorry spam. It wasn't clear from you post and there are still a lot of people out there that don't know about Red. Everyone thought it was a hoax when he teased the RedOne.

I don't own one. But I did get my hands on one for a while. I'm smitten, is all I can say.

They sure do make pretty pictures!

However, the processing required to debayer the RAW format and then transcode to ProRes is quite involved with long render times. But it's worth the wait. I just hope people don't buy a Scarlet thinking they're buying a plug-n-play "video" camera.

I'd been following the whole announcement and so forth on DV Info Net since the beginning. I look forward to everything they do.

Can you set it to capture to another format other than Red RAW? The whole point of capturing to disk is to save the capture time. If you have to do a long conversion, it kind of defeats the whole straight to edit possibility.

I'd like to get a couple of new cameras but I think I'll end up going for ones that capture 1080p to solid state and DVC Pro HD compression. I'll see what the Scarlet offers but if it doesn't ship till next year - not sure about international shipping/compatibility either, has a price over $3000, it might be worthwhile sticking to lower-end cameras.

I don't need more than 1080p and solid state recording wouldn't allow a lot of stored video. Price range per camera would be about £3000/$5000. I'd like variable frame rate though for slow-mo shots.

    The cameras here:

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/find/new...8-ProVideo.jsp

seem to be mostly 720p, which is what we shoot at now anyway but something higher would be good to experiment with. I don't really want an AVCHD workflow as we use Final Cut. We can shoot up to 8 or 9 hours of footage too so something cost effective regarding shooting time.

The Panasonic HVX200 seems quite good but it's not great for shoulder work and has a fixed lens.

My thought is that maybe what is up isn't so much a camera as it is a processing and storage system for the cameras. The problem with REDs cameras is that they are a limited solution. What they need is a workstation that can process those raw files in realtime. The innovation may come from using an array of GPUs to do the encoding.

Well it is a thought. I'm just going against the grain here a bit but everyone seems focused on a new camera and I think there is great potential in things outside of that. Of course that doesn't mean that they couldn't put that processing power straight into a camera either. Imagine a fully processed image stream coming straight out of the camera.

    NICE

Scarlet is no longer the Prosumer dream but RED has just created something that is the essence of American ingenuity.
