LOL ... great read ... most developers are totally honest with their "efforts" ... I've seen often a developers call his app silly, useless, etc ... and in this case, crap.
And of course we at KRAPPS agree, but welcome all these KRAPPS
So an app that on the desktop is $80 and does the same thing on an iPhone should be $5? Seriously...
The desktop equivalent of a $5 iPhone app might be priced at $20.
A $5 limit is a bit rigid, but then, iPhone apps are a lot harder to pirate, so the kind of person that would pay for an app if there was no "five finger discount version" available would be more likely to do so.
Obvious answer is a new section called 'crap apps'

Agreed, there are WAY more crappier apps than Sound Grenade ... what about Hold The Button or Finger Sprint?
What is this guy complaining about, this is how software in general is. Good that Apple is providing a platoform that all forms of apps can be downloaded from and not just what a bunch of snobs on the internet deem to be good software.
He's not complaining. He just wanted to make a useless app and see where it would go...and was surprised to see that it hit the top. His point was clear...good valued apps are not getting the recognition they deserve because useless apps are making them invisible.
On a quick check, there are 30 app results in a search for "fart".
well there are OVER 50 fart apps available ... when farts were first approved, these apps were coming out at about 3 per day ... just crazy ... I know that "sex sells", but who knew "farts sell"
Apps that are free downloads from the App Store but then generate revenue through ads are a gray area in the Terms of Service, aren't they? I mean, Apple is doing a lot of work and not getting anything for it...
Apple gets everything from it...people visiting the iTunes Store....they may find other things they want to buy while they are there.
$200 an hour eh? I bet he really is crying about the situation. $5k a day. If he's lucky he has paid off his mortgage in three months time even if it drops off in popularity.
And don't be surprised at how popular these would be with young people, a perfect application to be free, for teenagers to scare other teenagers and their parents. I'd certainly add a selection of scary noises you could select to the application, and maybe "fake application" screens, so you see what you think is the iPod application, press it, and bam, a "haha you're watching porn" sample - lend the ipod to your mate, and laughs, for a minute. And yes, it's a fad. But if each tiny update results in an ad-hit for him as well (would it?)...
Just great. Today at lunch one hundred thousand programmers are going to skip lunch and write a KRAPP and upload it to the KRAPPstore. Who can blame them. It does not even have to be this successful. If it only generated $5 per hour in ad revenue it would be worth skipping lunch.
KRAPPS were a huge problem before but as more and more of these unbelievably wild crap to riches stories make the rounds we will surely see an exponential explosion of KRAPP very soon!

These comments could only come from a 22-year old. The most popular downloads are novelty items, aka "impulse buys". The real-world equivalent is the wacky pen or Chapstick or pack of gum that sits waiting for you in the checkout aisle. There's nothing wrong with creating the right novelty app. He should be thankful he's clever and is able to make money with his efforts. Hell, I'd like to hire that kid to develop a page full of app ideas I've been working on.
Incidentally, the other 2 apps "High Gloss" developed, "Angleometer" and "Levelometer" were not at all clever or unique. He's lucky he developed Sound Grenade and should follow it up in rapid-fire fashion with a multi-sound Sound Grenade for 99 cents.
Eventually Apple will start filtering Apps. Maybe after a year or two.
Making a rule like if your app doesn't stay in the top 200 for two months, it will be placed on hold, and then later deleted. \
I hope they don't make that kind of rule. Eventually there will be very useful apps that will only appeal to a minority. These apps would not make the top 500 even. I would lie to see better search methods on the app store to find and /or categorize these apps better

Ok bad joke.

You mean smell?
I tracked back to this story here "Crap" App Milking $200/hr
What's the difference?

Doesn't Britney Spears have another song in the top 10?
What's the difference?
Very well said. It's all about preference.
However, it seems to me more like luck--and a POSITIVE story--than "rewarding crap apps."
By sheer luck, the dev quickly created an app that peopel actually LIKE--and that's not really "crap" at all.
Now, maybe it's a shame that people understand and want/like a super-simple app more readily than they do a complex app. But that's life.
I do think a new "toys" category is a good idea. It could filter some of the noise out of the current Games, Utilities, etc.
